This is a VERY good bang for buck robot vacuum with real-time obstacle avoidance. It uses lidar AND dToF sensors to scan for objects like pet toys, waste, etc. More expensive models don't even have this.

Looking to get my older dad a robot vacuum with self emptying. I live Nextdoor so it wouldn't be a troubleshooting issue. Would this last?

Thanks for the post! I bought two of the vacuums. Currently using the N8+ and need more suction power for carpet. The mapping software is a little finicky and will forget the map sometimes but overall no major issues. we do not use the mopping function though, just suction at max on wood floors and rugs.

Ecovacs software, particularly mapping is absolutely frustrating and garbage. It simply forgets your map on occasion then you must remap and manually reconfigure no go zones and room names which forces a manual reconfiguration of the rooms in my Home Assistant automations. I can't recommend against Ecovacs enough! I've had my T8 for 4 years and it's been non stop problems from the start including being stuck for several months in "mopping mode" despite me never putting water into the mopping reservoir. I fixed that by simply draining the battery to zero and resetting the entire vacuum which again forced remapping and reconfiguring. Don't you dare move the base station even a few inches! It will trigger another remap and reconfigure.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

I have had 3 ecovacs deebots. They have always worked. But they do not last. They always break after 2-3 years.

It's either the wheels/rollers. The sensor or some other BS.

Is there another brand that's better?

I got the Eco vac T8 plus at Thanksgiving's in 2020 and it's been going amazing since then a minor issue is the Elder band caused an issue so I had to replace that and it wasn't spinning and malfunctioning I put in a better band. And yes, maybe once a year or two it has a problem locating itself, but that gets fixed in a day or so.
But the more majority of the time it works wonderful

I bought a new N8+ a year ago from the Walmart deal for $199. It vacuums decently well, especially if you increase the suction setting (at the expense of run time obviously). The only downside is that the map occasionally resets itself so you have to let it run for the entire house as opposed to targeting certain rooms. This seems to be a decent deal if you don't mind refurbished.

Poor lifetime, I had it from last 2 yrs and every other day some configuration issue. Now it's not connecting to app at all. Almost useless now. I won't recommend this N8+.

I had this issue happen with T20. I fixed it by making it do a whole house clean. Then just stop it halfway and this resolved it.

Stay away!! As others have said the software is terrible. And the actual vacuum stopped working about a year after. The LIDAR is used only for mapping the rooms. No obstacle detection or avoidance. Pretty maintenance heavy too, the main roller would get entangled with hair.

I got the ECOVACS DEEBOT U2SE from WalMart in April for like $70. It is REALLY dumb, no mapping, no nothing, gets stuck periodically, but works great. It has been pretty transformative for all the hardwood and tile floors it covers. I got the "Ecovacs" brush/roller kit off AliExpress so I will probably change that out after the holiday. What failures are you seeing besides the mapping?

Yeah mine is basically useless after 18 months. Won't connect to the app. Forgets the maps. Easily gets stuck. Forgets where "home" is. It's like having a drunk relative overstay their welcome.

I own Ecovacs for 2 years now and I definitely agree with others that they don't last long. The support tells you to get it fixed own your own cost even though it's a software issue. Never buys this brand again. No software update for 2 years

I'd buy any other brand. Mine is being replaced this week after 2 years of ownership because I'm just fed up with it at this point. The map constantly gets reset which is super annoying because you have to reset the no go zones and the schedule every time it does, it also takes ages to map in the first place. Starting this week the vac won't even connect to the app anymore which was the final straw for me.
IMO the self emptying isn't that big of a deal. The bags these empty into cost money and they're relatively small so you're emptying and replacing them fairly often anyway.
