Just got one of these. The reprogrammable slots are awesome... however, it doesn't pop up like my childhood version.
I think the slots make it heavier and they didn't upgrade the mechanism.
Overall I think it's still a great toy and I love the new feature, but I would be lying if I didn't get saddened by the fact that my kids didn't get the same thrill or pre-pop anxiety I did when I was a kid.

You can always watch the original version to see if it goes on sale, currently $25 on Amazon.
I would say it improves fine motor skills and with a sprinkle of slight anxiety more than OCD.
Friend with PTSD and rather severe anxiety HATES this game. I like it and the swappable slots make it more of a challenge as after a person memorizes the static original it becomes pretty easy to beat the clock.
Weirdly, it's easier than the original one. May be because it has less of confusingly similar pieces, but my daughter and I are consistently able to perform better on this one compared to the original (which I gave my parents after getting this). Even randomizing the layout doesn't make it harder than the original.
