These two make one controller essentially. You would need another set of these two to play most games two player. Some games you can use just one of these like mariokart for example. That sounds about as clear as mud probably. If you are wanting two people to play games together you should buy another set of these. Someone else can chime in if i am wrong about any of that

the console already comes with two of these. Are these only useful when there are more than 2 players?

YMMV, but the joycons eventually wear out or get what is known as "joycon drift." I'm looking at my second set of replacement joycons for my OG switch.

Many games require or have options for both joycons in paired mode (or a first or second party pro controller) for two players.

You have to scroll down and click the text button that says "Purple". Unlike other websites, the Costco page does not have picture thumbnails of the different versions.
