So let's get to it:
If you contrast that with other store fronts, they'll
- Try to corner the market with exclusive content and only go to other store fronts when their own fail (EA is a prime example of that)
- Buying on EA means less features available, and higher risk of them taking it away from you, especially if they shut down the store (Game for Windows Live comes to mind)
- Have inferior features and modding isn't possible or supported (Xbox games on Windows Store)
- Many other store fronts don't support indie (or up and coming) developers
- Don't provide keys for other platforms/store fronts
- and so much more negatives....
Point is, Valve earns that fee for a reason and why even after publishers started chasing other stores like Epic Store with a lower cut, they came back to Steam. Put simply Steam has built up a reason for why they should get that 30% and it's not first mover advantage. It's about being consumer centric and friendly. The two store fronts I will even pay more to use is Steam and GoG, because they've shown themselves to treat their customer right.
I have some content on EA store, and I initially went there for my EA games, but quickly learned there's a lot more issues with it and whatever whim EA might come up with that turns away customers.
