Open-box ROG Ally is about the same price at Best Buy. I wasn't a fan of the Deck's materials quality, size, or (especially) the LCD screen. Now that Bazzite is being developed for the Ally, I'd almost argue it's the better investment at this point in the game.

That said, the Deck does have a massive and active community, so any problem you have will be documented somewhere else. Valve also partneredwith iFixIt and repair parts are readily available.

And then when the 2 comes out, you'll say something else is weak and how you can't wait for the 3. Repeat.

Support is key, otherwise it just turns into a paperweight over time.

This is a great price for LED but OLED is not to be underestimated. Imo it is a clear step up in visual and battery life. The price difference there is for a good reason.

Almost purchased. So would rog ally be better or adding windows to this
No one knows how Valve/Linux will fix this issue. If it's even fixable.

WIndows isn't optimized for the Steamdeck & would add costs to the device (one of its main advantages).

ROG Ally is a window-based handheld so it should work. However Xbox's handheld has already been leaked & confirmed. Can wait to see what that is since it's likely to get better support.

a lot of people say running steam in big picture / simplified (controller friendly) interface mode gets you most of the way there if you're on windows. Then some enterprising linux people usually come up with a linux os based option as well so it's not like steam deck is the only game in town. imo, it has the best physical control options

Love this response, but I'll just add that there are a large swath of consumers that want a "hassle free" experience with these handheld gaming machines. I have both and Ally and a Steam Deck but one constant theme in a lot of the forums are individuals that don't realize the Ally is a Windows 11 machine that requires you to set things up. Sure the device is more powerful (Z1 Extreme) but the unfortunate truth is some people turn on devices like the Ally, Legion Go, or MSI Claw and just want it to "work" without having to download different Operating Systems and stuff.
Bazzite is pretty sick though.

Go to Microcenter and use 3 $25 off $100 coupons to get 3 $100 Steam gift cards for $75 each, then use them to purchase the Deck. Brings it down to $260 or so.

OG Xbox, PS3 (a big chunk of the library) and WiiU,
It is a way better deal for emulation than Chinese retro handhelds
Some switch title as well I guess?

I own steam deck and totally regret not getting the OLED. The screen in base is not great. Some won't see it or notice it or appreciate it but I do. Color accuracy not good. Old also has increased hardiness of design for better repeated opening and closing. It also has a huge wifi speed upgrade. Non oled is for suckers now

Also because you aren't running windows things like punk buster and other antichest won't work locking you out of tons and tons of games like say battlefield series or rising storm Vietnam

I will say I respect Kyledkat's choice here, but the median person looking for this kind of thing chooses a Steam deck for a reason, and there's a reason the more expensive ROG Ally is selling at the same price now, they have to clear inventory because it has quite a few flaws most people are not okay with.

As someone who doesn't have a Steam Deck, but up until now missed everything going on, can anyone comment on getting one now and it's competition? Is it worth getting one now?
I am utterly out of date on any information for this, but looking to buy this year. Thanks in advance for help, repp for assistance!
I have both. Like you, I was out of date. I read a lot. Considering what's going on, I recommend either this deal for the Steam Deck or the Ally Z1E (the Z1 Extreme), which can be had for under $500 and offers more power. The Ally Z1, priced around $300, is also excellent and probably sufficient for your needs. Most people suggest going for the Z1 Extreme because it provides more value for the extra cost. All will meet your gaming needs. I believe the ROG Ally may not have enough battery life for true portability, as people often plug it in while playing. Personally, I like that it might limit my screen time. Also Ally runs a slim version of Windows 11 (Armoury Crates), for some it's a turnoff but I kinda like it. I use mine to read pdf books as well as gaming.

Additionally, you can buy a docking station for around $30 that converts them into a console. They double up in function. I bought the 'Baseus 6-in-1 Docking Station for Steam Deck/ROG Ally X/Legion Go with HDMI 2.0 4K@60Hz' from Amazon, and it's very nice. I have the official Steam Deck dock station, but I think this one is even better than that. That's the talk of 2023-24 and what I consider year of the handhelds.

You can upgrade the hard drive yourself to 2TB. Depending on your toolkit, it may take an hour or two. While some people claim it only takes 15 minutes, that's typically the time removing and inserting the HDD, the literal process of doing just that, which make it seem deceptively simple than the actual reality. Be careful when taking apart the case, as it requires skill. The internal J-hooks need to be pried the right way to avoid damaging the case. What I like is after installation of a new hard drive the cloud reinstallation of Windows 11 was easy!

With Steam, on the software side of installing Steam OS, they used a compression extension that needs to be extracted. Then mount. If you decide to install Windows 11 for SD, Valve released the drivers necessary for it to function properly. So SD has the service support.

Got 64GB version in June in similar sale. Upgraded storage to 2TB WD_BLACK drive ($116.60 amazon with amex deal). Also bought UGREEN docking station ($20 aliexpress) to connect to TV.

This 512GB is a good value if you are OK with that amount of storage.

The only thing that worries me about Lenovo's handheld is how quickly they drop products that aren't selling well. They did something similar with the VRX headset just recently. Steam isn't going anywhere (and either is Lenovo) but it's definitely something to consider. Support could immediately dry up.
while that is absolutely true, there's not much LENOVO can support the GO anymore

other than GPU drivers that you can yourself install, what else is there?

the ALLY is weaker GPU wise than the STEAM deck, it's only a better option if you plan to emulate PS3 games

it's the reason they are always so cheap, the non-Z1E version never made sense in the first place
