Very confusing as it says "is only compatible with Thunderbolt 4/3 USB4. It cannot be backward compatible with USB 3.2/3.1/4.0/3.0/2.0". So, for USB 4, does it work or not? If I were a betting man, I'd say it is only compatible with Thunderbolt 3/4 and not USB 4 at all (if that's even possible since TB4 supports USB 4). A true TB4 port is backwards compatible to all the lesser USB specs so I wonder what TB4 controller is in this thing?
It means the device itself only speaks Thunderbolt 3/4 tunneled PCIe mode, it cannot do pure USB UAS/UMS mass storage so you need a computer that has a 40gbps USB4 port or a TB3/4 port. Tunneled PCIe is an optional part of the USB4 spec so you can have a USB4 port that only does 10/20gbps USB3.2, in which case this drive won't connect at all.

Personally I prefer getting one with a hybrid USB + PCIe chipset because it is rather inconvenient if you find yourself in a situation where you can't connect to your external drive at all from an unsupported device. Unless you are truly only buying it to extend storage on a thunderbolt capable device.

This is one of the best and fastest external nvme enclosures but it's a little too pricey for me.

Instead, I bought an Acasis TBU405Air 40Gbps enclosure for $51 from their website with a BF discount. It doesn't cool quite as well as the OWC but it's good enough for me.

www.acasis.com

Be careful, Acasis has several enclosures that are similar in appearance with slightly different features. I bought the cheaper enclosure that only supports Thunderbolt 3/4 and USB 4.0 for my M4 mac mini. This version is not compatible with earlier USB types but there are options that do.
The TBU405Air draws too much power on mine (Mac mini) and I've to unplug another device to make it work. Unfortunately, this is a dealbreaker for me even though I know it only supports TB4/USB4. It's a perfect setup in your use case and the price is right.

I got 2 of these Acasis TBU405Air and one was DOA, just a blinking green light. Moved the nvme to the other enclosure and works fine. Now waiting a on the RMA Frown I am questioning the quality of Acasis if one of them was just bad. But the speed is nice and it gets really really HOT

Similar situation. Have a M4 mac mini on order and was looking for a 40 Gbps enclosure to house a 4TB 990 Pro.

I ordered this "Air" variation via the Acasis store on WalMart.com for around $50 a few days ago.

Would have preferred an enclosure with USB 3.1 downward compatibility, but I have a half dozen of the smaller 10Gbps portables... and this one will probably stay attached to the Mac Mini full time.

Have you performed any data copy speed tests? It appears to have the common Intel JHL7440 TB3 controller, so I assume it can reach ~2,800 to 3,000Mbps sequential read/writes depending on the NVMe drive.

The Acasis store listing for the TBU405Air on WalMart.com shows it comes with a "1*0.5M Thunderbolt 3 Data Cable"

I bought one of these recently to go with my m4 mac mini and haven't had any problems. The one thing that has annoyed me is how bright that LED on the front is. I covered it with tape
