For the first time ever, Tesla has officially introduced end-of-lease buyouts for the Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck in the U.S.
End-of-lease buyouts are now also available for the Model S/X.
All current Tesla lessees will be eligible for a buyout at a future date. Tesla Lease Trust customers will be able to request a buyout quote directly through the Tesla app. For those with leases from other lenders, you can contact your specific lender to initiate the buyout process.

But yes, Why????
This is great news. Now I can actually buy something I don't need, with the money I don't have, to impress people I don't like.
Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank Knightshade
Leasing avoids the income caps that previously prevented some folks from getting the $7500 IRA credit.
I think it ALSO avoids the price cap (so a sedan over 55k or an SUV over 80 would qualify) which unlocks even more options for buyers who otherwise were excluded
Without a buyout though it wasn't a good option for people who wanted to keep the car.
Now you can effectively get the $7500 credit at any income level--- "lease" it to get the credit, then just buy out the car from the lease.
TONS of folks were doing this all along with non-Tesla EVs that otherwise didn't qualify-- now you can do it with Teslas too.

One way people avoid it is to buyout quickly after lease inception but it seems Tesla only offers it at end of lease term

Buy price including taxes minus fed rebate is 45k
Lease incl taxes is 370 per month, down payment 3k buyout about 28k total 44k
Weird lease makes more sense

Also I think Tesla couldn't off load the lease returned cars anymore on the secondary markets.
But agree with you: it's a lever they are pulling due to waning demand.
