Not to trivialize your concern, but I don't think there's an atom on the planet that doesn't cause cancer.

As far as cast iron goes, it's probably a far safer alternative than Teflon, stainless steel or aluminum.

You may have gotten some bad information and are believing some sensationalist propaganda regarding non-stick pans.

Cast iron is not a non-stick surface. The non-stick properties they have are from seasoning with fats at high temperatures and are generally considered safe or harmless.

PS: This is a hell of a deal for a basic skillet and gets favorable reviews.

I have a gas stove. I have never used a cast iron skillet. Would this be a good cheap way to try it out? Or are cheap skillets just bad? Thanks

Yeah, minus the snarky CA comment, maybe read up on a product to learn more. If you're relying on accurate health and wellness information from a "deals" forum/website, you may want to reconsider the thinking of that particular approach.

Do these things cause cancer? Genuinely curious. Seems like many manufacturers are making things that are carcinogenic in some way in modern society.

My only suggestion would be to get the 12" one.

Try it, when you love it you can just keep using this one, or if you feel the need, upgrade to a name brand.

I use my cast iron pan (no brand) at least weekly, sometimes daily for everything.. cornbread, deep dish pizza, and of course any type of meat that needs searing. Cast makes the best steaks and chicken thighs EVER!

You could try searing a steak or salmon at high heat for 3 mins each side and then baking it for a few mins in the oven.

This would be an excellent choice for anyone new to cooking with cast iron. My suggestion is you watch a few YouTube videos for hints on using cast iron. Even though it's "pre-seasoned," it would be prudent to season it several times before using it, you won't regret it. I recommend watching the cast iron series from Cowboy Kent Rollins on YouTube. Do that first.

Since you're new to cast iron, always bring the skillet up to temperature slowly. Cast iron doesn't like it when you put a cold skillet on a blazing hot burner.

Happy cooking - enjoy your new skillet!

Cast Iron from China, no thanks.

I can't subscribe to sending a piece of cast iron halfway around the world just to save $5 or whatever over a Lodge or any of the other American cast iron manufacturers.

Gas stove here too. I use a name brand cast iron, an off brand cast iron and may get this one too. I cook all meals (even eggs) in cast iron now, aside from a few dishes in stainless steel. Tip: When you get the cast iron, throw it immediately into your oven and do an oven clean which will strip the cast iron to bare metal. Then research on how to season your cast iron. Once you do this, you'll have a slick surface. Also, cast iron may take a little getting used to on how to cook with it (medium to medium high heat). For $10, give a it try.

Why would it be it safer than stainless steel or aluminum?

I could be wrong. Aluminum, and stainless steel are more maleable than Iron as a metal. You can scrub them and they can get scratched and release metals into your food. Iron doesn't scratch as easily, reducing metal toxicity possibilities.

It's shaped exactly like a Lodge pan, so they're probably the OEM.
