If it prompts you to add device to iCloud to confirm coverage, that means the serial number is valid. The page will return an error if the serial number is invalid.
Majority of fakes have serial numbers that check out in apple's system. The only way to find out is to compare them physically (and acoustically) agains the ones bought from apple.

Yep, I just read about this. Looks like the steps are more involved just to verify they are real. Looks like pairing the AirPods are required and even that may not be foolproof.

I've been researching more - a more concrete way of figuring out if they are real or fakes is by updating the firmware. Easiest way to do this is connect the airpods case to your computer. Let it update (takes 5-10 mins). Afterwards, check the firmware by going to settings of your phone, click on the airpods, and scroll down to firmware. Should be the latest firmware (7B21). If they are fakes, the firmware won't be updated

Store price changed to $169.99. Must have been a glitch in their system. Hope you guys got your deals. I tried last night and they wouldn't let me price match Apple products.

UPDATE*
Was able to get it price matched through customer support on the app, after placing my order using the $15 off $90 Circle reward and 5% off with Red card.

**edit & update: 12/01: i went to the store. electronics department grabbed it from inventory. i asked for an amazon $154 price match. also applied RedCard 5%, $20 off $120 Circle deal, and two $15 giftcards from the $100 appl bux deal from last week. pretty slick deal. thanks op.

FYI the weird chemical smell is coming from the silicone tips in case anyone was wondering. It appears to be normal, and should go away with time.

They wouldn't do a price adjustment, so I returned the $159 ones (brand new, unopened), and bought the $130 ones (after the targeted discount). They had to open the returned ones in front of me, making sure I wasn't returning a fake.

If they had just done the price adjustment they wouldn't be out a new set of Airpods Pro2…

I ended up paying $73 out the door. I had 20% off targeted coupon ($30 off) + my $50 off for signing up to Circle Card (man I thought this would not work due to limitations) = 5% off CC member. Thanks for the heads up. My Air Pod Pro (Gen1) are kind of dying on me.
