Would it kill Schlage to modernize their hardware? This feels like it's dated a few decades now.

It still works. Look at Doorking.

The newer tech breaks more. (I sold locks for a living)

Works flawlessly. Even in cold weather with snow, rain, etc.

Highly recommend these for gates, garages, etc.

Pretty standard price though. I've purchased 4 at or around this price

Few bucks more for the FE595 which has flex lock. I had this for my garage entry for years and absolutely love the flex lock option. You can twist the knob on the inside to leave it unlocked or set to auto lock.

Limited-time deal: SCHLAGE FE595 CAM 619 ACC Camelot Keypad Entry with Flex-Lock and Accent Levers, Satin Nickel https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001CO9RJS

Works flawlessly, battery lasts a long time. Recently had it where the battery ran down prior to the low warning and wouldn't unlock by keypad, keypad would accept my code and sound the low warning but didn't have enough juice to engage the mechanism. Backup key can work in this case and after replacing the battery, it was back to normal.

Agreed, I didn't install any of the smart stuff once I moved went with schillage and it's not dependent on WiFi and all you have to take care of is the battery.

Do these support a similar feature like the "smart key" that is in Kwikset locks? I want to minimize the # of keys I carry around/keep.

I manage properties and this lock breaks allot. It's all we use so don't know what works better. But really wish it had better maniacs. Need to try a new brand.

Doesn't the presence of the "backup key" diminish the security of a smart lock by allowing them to be picked like any traditional lock?

Schlage are more secure than Kwikset. And locks are generally easy to work on. Add a security pin or two. Protects against several elementary attacks. In fact, the last Schlage I bought already had a spool bit in slot 1.

I have the schlage dead bolts and highly recommend it. This version isn't great for the cold climate. I bought one for my walk out basement for the northeast. The battery, since it's stored in the exterior side of the door, would die prematurely from the cold.
