I keep looking at these things but pretty much all gerber multitools seem to be an interesting idea with just enough problems with the execution to make them probably not worth the trouble.

Dang that makes it useless to me. Shame that they don't put a lock on it so it doesn't strip screws and close on your hand or start spinning off when your hand is in an awkward angle.
You're right. I had one, loved the size and combination of tools but have no idea why the driver doesn't lock. I lost mine and it's the one thing keeping me from ordering another

Yep. I carried a pocket knife to school, and sometimes a sheath knife. They were ordinary accessories back in the day.

Does the knife and screwdriver lock in place?
The knife does, but none of the others tools do.

I have one and thought that it was broken the first time the driver collapsed while I was using it.
It's a serious oversight. I think I paid less than $20 when Al's had all the Gerber's on sale in the Fall. It's an acceptable knife and scissors I keep in my work (office) bag, but it's not am EDC. I have the Leatherman Skeletool CX for that. Very satisfied though it's a bit more ($75 or so).

For tools I don't mind paying more for quality that works and lasts. Maybe they'll learn from their oversights on this one.

This uses Gerbers slim bits, which seem to have slimmer flathead and phillips. I lent this to a co-worker that lost the bit, but I was able to replace it with a standard similar hex bit but the generic seems longer and doesn't allow the center drive to close completely unless I have the flat bit side out (Phillips facing inside) and rotated so that it doesn't knock the frame.
In a pinch, I've used it with different bits and knowing it doesn't have a lock for the center drive, I sometimes have this 90° to get extra leverage to tighten or loosen things. I know my own strength and was able to apply a lot of torque pressure without torsioning the joint.

The onyx came up as $20 for me at Amazon as well even though the price showed $24.99
