1Password has experienced two notable incidents:
- January 2023: 1Password discovered suspicious activity in its system that manages employee-facing applications. Although the attackers gained access to the support system of the IT service management company, Okta, 1Password confirmed that there was no unauthorized access to user data. The company terminated the attack and enhanced its security measures.
- September 2022: 1Password sent data breach warnings to over 6,000 customers, informing them that their accounts had been compromised. The attacks did not breach 1Password's systems; instead, hackers targeted individual accounts using credential stuffing (attempting to log in with stolen usernames and passwords). 1Password reset passwords on breached accounts and advised customers to enable two-factor authentication.
There is no evidence of any other significant breaches or security incidents affecting 1Password's user data. The company's Watchtower feature, which integrates with Have I Been Pwned (HIBP), monitors known data breaches and alerts users if their information has been exposed, allowing them to change compromised passwords before they're exploited.In summary, 1Password has experienced two incidents: one involving a support system breach (no user data compromise) and another involving credential stuffing attacks on individual accounts (reset passwords and 2FA recommendations).
