The DiscoverIt card finally has value this quarter for those that also have Target and Prime 5% cards. (Amazon & Target are Q4 5% categories.)
Edit: I did a chat on discover.com and asked if I could get a retention offer since I was considering cancelling and immediately got offered a bonus 3% extra Cashback for three months effective the next day. Worth a shot to get 8% CB with your Discover card instead of 5!

I ain't buying gift cards no more. Very difficult to keep track.
It certainly isn't cash equivalent, and you have to keep in mind the small inconvenience and tying up the funds for a while. And agreed on many gift cards.
But the Target cards are not "very difficult to keep track". You buy the digital card that is almost immediately delivered. Then you copy and paste that into your Target wallet. Done. I always use the Target wallet at checkout anyway, because I'm not going to carry my Target credit card with me just on the off chance I go to Target.
On another subject, I like the way that Target makes it easy to buy one for yourself. We're not even pretending any more.

Correct. You would not get free shipping if you pay only by GCs. So, it is better to buy some small value GCs so that one can still pay a small portion with the red card for free shipping.
I buy the max amount in Target gift cards at this time every year using my Discover card to get a total of 14.5% off. I add the gift cards to my Target mobile wallet. Then use the Target mobile wallet to pay for my prescriptions at CVS pharmacy inside of Target. This way I get 14.5% off of my prescriptions.

No, if you have Chase's Amazon card and Target's Red Card, then both of Discover's categories were useless, until this deal where Discover gives another 5% cashback on the GCs when the Red card will not.
I feel like this is the only time I use my discover card now
true. Since Discover removed the majority of their benefits like rental insurance, warranty, travel insurance, etc its almost worthless compared to most other cards.
I still have the $500 GC from last year. Target prices are normally 10% higher than Walmart and other stores, so .....
I also buy $500 in Target GCs every year. Used PayPal with Chase for extra 5% off this year. I'll give $200 in cards away as gifts this year and save the other $300 until BF next year. Target always heavily discounts previous year Apple Watch for BF so I'll use the remaining $300 for AW10 in 2025. I'll use my red card for 5% off other misc. Target purchases through the year.
I picked-up new AW9 GPS+Cellular on BF this year for $299 total using my $300 GCs from last year. Time to sell the AW8 I bought same way last year

I only buy gift cards places where I can load them to my account immediately. So Amazon, Target, Netflix, Hulu are fine.
For amazon and Netflix, once you load the gc into your account, the gc is destroyed and no one can use it except the account and you don't have to keep the gc. is target the same way, I don't think so. do loading a target gc onto (instead of into) your account prevent someone else from using (stealing) those funds?

$90 for $100 GC
5% of 90 is $4.50
$14.50 total savings per $100

My son uses target a lot for his groceries as it is walking distance from his dorm. This is perfect to save the 10%.
Then swap a discover card between me and the wife to get that 5% first year match
It's so weird they allow GCs at target pharmacies!
