It's better to get this from Apple for $129, considering you get a $25 gift card back, and if you use the Amazon / Target deal for 15% off Apple GCs, it comes out to about $85!

How is this even a popular deal?

Ethernet version was $100 just 12 hours ago. I know it's OOS, but there has to be some yardstick for these "hot deals"

No. They didn't add that until the A17 chip. If they made a new model, and used the M17 chip or something newer, it would have hardware support. I have seen comments from people saying they've had success with software decoding on the device using apps like Infuse, though take that with an appropriately sized grain of salt for unverified comments from internet randos on sites like reddit. The A15 can probably do at least 1080p AV1, 4K might start getting a bit iffy depending on bitrate.
I reckon there's no point in upgrading yet, then, since I didn't care about eARC or QMS and it seems like all the 4K models are damn near identical except for those features.

Thanks for the info!

That's right. I bought it exactly by purchasing the Apple gift card via Target circle

I made two separate purchases for Apple gift cards to earn $15 target gift cards. If you purchase using Target credit card, you will get additional $5 so technically you will get $20 for each transaction.

I had also enabled the Target circle rewards program to earn $15 (have to make two $75 purchase)

So I got below target rewards

$20 + $20 + $15 =$55.00

Plus Apple gift card from Apple - $25

Total $55 + $25 =$80.00

I get no ads on my ROKU stand-a-lone device, zero, so not sure if I won some sort of lottery or you misread my comment thinking I use a Roku integrated television, which I do not, so not real sure what you are referencing specifically. 🤷 ♂️

1. that google one is $100
2. 64GB storage instead of 32GB
3. Wifi 6 instead WiFi 5
4. better CPU/GPU
The $100 one is called the Google Streamer. I do agree that the google streamer is more comparable to AppleTV than Google TV 4k(formerly chromecast).
Re the RAM, I don't even use the smaller one on my chromecast. Wifi 5 is also plenty enough for streaming 4K.
So I still don't get why I'd pay anything over the $30 I paid for the Google TV 4K, since it's almost lag-free compared to my LG TV's built in smart TV.
My question remains; what extra functionality do I get from Apple TV?

You don't get access to extras in Apple TV app on non-Apple TV devices. Extras similar to extras you get when buying blu-ray. Example I use is Aliens movie. You get access to the Special Edition Directors cut on Apple TV, whereas other streaming devices you just get the theatrical release. Also nice to play Apple Music on home theater with Atmos.

Is the Ethernet port even really needed? I have FiOS and my internet is fast as hell. Now that I think about it, nothing in my house is hard wired with ethernet, all WiFi. And I realize this model has 128gb, but what is that storage actually used for? Downloaded movies or just apps?

I'm looking to get this to replace a 4 yr old Fire Stick, and my wife and I only use about 6-7 streaming apps total. Starting to think the WiFi only model may suffice.

From what I can tell, that was a price mistake. Lots of reports of orders being canceled.

Not true actually. For whatever reason Costco doesn't classify the Apple TV as electronics and you can return it at any time
Electronics aren't categorically 90 day returns. Only explicitly enumerated items are restricted to 90 day returns.

Lol it's not a price mistake. It's been that price before at Costco.com.

I got mine in the mail from Costco a few hours ago.

This is the right answer.

Roku sucks. My friend works there as a software engineer and was telling me how they've pivoted to earn $$$$ from ads
