I spend a lot of time in my office chair, told myself I was going to splurge this year and get a super good chair. But holy crap is something like the Embody super expensive. I still might get one, but sheesh.
I've seen alternatives like Fern and Steel something, but it stinks trying to buy without a nearby store to check them out in person.

Even with trying in person, you need to give it a period of adjustment to really see what works best for you. I purchased a Steelcase Gesture and grew to like it more over time than I did initially.
Try a popular one in home that's well reviewed and then prepare to send it back. While expensive, these are once a decade purchases.

I have owned them all. The Leap is a great all around chair, that's the safe bet, still have mine. I hated my Fern, sometimes liked my Embody, sometimes didn't, I have a Humanscale Freedom now and love it, just wish it had the build quality of the Leap. The Haworth Zody is good too. I don't really like the Steelcase Gesture but it has a headrest and the best arms out there so it's not a bad choice. Ekorness Stressless also makes office chair versions of their recliners so that would also be a good choice. You could also treat yourself and get an Eames Soft Pad executive height chair. A good chair is worth its weight in gold.
It's an excellent chair and I almost bought one but my Ekornes Stressless recliner is much better. Definitely not as attractive looking, but as a chair superior.

If you had to put a gun to my head and make me pick a favorite child that I thought people would be satisfied with my recommendation I would go with the Steelcase Leap. What it lacks is a great headrest like I have on my Humanscale Freedom and the better 4D arms on the Steelcase Gesture. That being said I have a Stressless recliner and absolutely love it and recently found out that they make office chairs too so I am looking for that for my next chair. Other than not being as solid and heavy as my Steelcase or Herman Miller or Haworth chairs I have been very happy with my Freedom chair. I don't care what anyone says, a headrest and a great headrest are a game changer. I can't in good conscience recommend the Fern, Aeron or Embody, I did not like them at all. There is a super high end version of the Leap that is discontinued now called the Leap Worklounge. I have been waiting forever for one to pop up on Marketplace, that might be the perfect chair.
Ouch, I had just about come to terms with splurging for a stool and then I was met with another $150 shipping charge. Missed the comment in the OP about shipping. Guess I assumed at prices like that it would be included. 😒

I bought a black embody in sync fabric in march 2021, for $1503 and some change. My previous chair was falling apart, completely busted. I decided to treat myself and order a chair that would last for 12+ years, based on the warranty. The first 2 weeks of sitting on the embody hurt my back and butt. I was having serious buyers remorse. I couldn't believe I spent so much money to have an uncomfortable chair. Fast forward and omg its the greatest chair I have ever owned. I can sit in this thing all day and not feel a thing. My body was so used to sitting in a busted chair I had to learn how to sit right. Honestly this chair has probably saved me pain and suffering in my future. 10/10 would buy again.
