The additional storage allows for continuous recording on some of the devices; I turned it on briefly but it filled up the old 1TB 2.5" mechanical drive I added as additional storage, and TBH I don't currently need 24/7 recording, but it's available if I want it.
I personally wouldn't have upgraded my older homebase for those features, I needed to for the newer doorbell cams with package detection. Nice thing is I took my 2 old doorbell cams and homebase and installed them at a friends house, it was nice to be able to reuse them.
