If you do work on your cars, I'd go with 3/8". Most parts that the average person works on with their car will be in the lower socket range (~8-21mm) and 3/8 (sockets, extensions, etc) will fit in tighter spaces.
If you strictly just swap rims, then 1/2" and a torque wrench is fine.
