Anyone have any scoop on the movement? Is it Timex made? Japanese? Swiss? Random Chinese generic? Looking for something that will have repairability down the road.

The Timex Expedition North Automatic Black Dial (TW2V54000) uses a Japanese automatic movement, specifically from Miyota, a well-known Japanese movement manufacturer owned by Citizen.

Details:

• Movement Type: Likely a Miyota 8215 or similar, known for reliability and durability.
• Origin: Japanese

Appears to be the Miyota 8215. Decent enough for most people, but not great.

Miyota is very durable, and I have miyota movements that are still keeping time (<10s per day) after 10 years. Unless you repair the watch yourself, you probably won't be repairing it. My watch repair guy charges less to replace a Miyota movement than to clean and lubricate it.

Thanks. Did I just miss that on the product page or did you find it elsewhere? Regardless, thanks and Repped! !

Thank you. Starting to look for a grad present for my son. Something he can wear daily for fieldwork (forestry-ish), but still nice. Doesn't have to be a 50-year heirloom but I'd like it to last a decade or so. The main "problem" with this one is that he already has quartz watch that looks similar. I think I'm starting to lean toward a stainless or ti dive-style watch+bracelet with minimal complications. A buddy is telling me the San Martin watches are a great value.

Feel free to holler with any suggestions.

Sorry, yeah, that's what I meant. Wanted to make sure the movement was mainstream enough that I could drop in a new one if needed (rather than something no-name that is harder to replace if needed).

This. You can get great Chinese pieces with a NH35 movement for $50-$80. A lot of that price is just for the recognizable Timex name.

I'm not a nice-mechanical-watch guy—pretty much the opposite, as I wear only smartwatches—but I would think a metal bracelet would have a little too much vulnerable surface area for daily wear in any sort of high-damage-likelihood occupation. I had to retire an Apple link bracelet band to a drawer after a week because of the rapidly-multiplying scratches on its underside; a nicer PVD-coated bracelet would very likely fare better, but forestry field work is also probably tougher than my desk-nerd life (and my soft desk-nerd forearms hate the non-flush deployant clasps.) Any way you go, though, I'm sure your son will cherish it!

I'm in the same boat for my son. He wears an Apple Watch usually but mentioned needing something for more dressier professional occasions, which are very imminent! I was leaning towards an eco drive but some watch guys have convinced me to at least consider an automatic. I just bought my first automatic this year. Have always used quartz with battery. Auto is nice change and avoids the dead battery issue on watches that sit for awhile. So many options out there once you go looking. If you use Facebook look at the group Affordable Mechanical Watches for lots of opinions.

I got a glycine dive watch on sale around 300ish to wear when I don't want to wear one of the watches that are more important to me. My only complaint is the bezel getting scratched very easily. The first few make it look like crap and then as it ages it looks like it has character. Can't avoid the problem much on a colored bezel unless it's ceramic.

We have this weird thing in our family where our wrists sweat and it makes leather or fabric bands smell gross. It's a drag. Rubber/silicone is definitely an option. That said I've had pretty low end bracelets last a decade. I figure a brushed ti finish will probably hold up pretty well -- maybe some battle scars but should remain functional. Hopefully.

Thanks. Yeah, my kid is very *analog* so it seems like an auto is a good choice.

I've seen the gylcine watches -- they look like a good value. The San Martin's do have the ceramic bezels -- that plus a sapphire crystal seems like a good way to keep the watch looking decent for a while. Thanks for the suggestions.
