It has been $1 less a couple days after Christmas
My annual post to remind everyone that virtually NO ONE needs any Turbotax version higher than Deluxe (and those that do already know it)

Although Intuit advertising will say things like Premier or H&B are recommended for people with certain circumstances the fact is that Deluxe includes all the forms you need.

In your case litesdsd, you definitely do not need anything more than Deluxe, it can handle brokerage/stock transactions just fine.

To avoid the usual replies every year, this only applies to the download/desktop version of TT, the online version of the service is completely different and the deluxe service offering online doesn't cover the same thing that the deluxe desktop version does.

https://turbotax.intuit.com/perso...e/desktop/

I'm self-employed and used Deluxe for years. SE do not need home & business, if you need the "extra help" that H&B claims to have fine but if your tax situation is the same as last year then paying more doesn't make any sense.

I don't have crypto but look at this. They appear to be pushing people into using the 'Online' version of Premier. Confusing to say the least!

The cheapest (with a $10 Amazon GC) has traditionally been on the Wednesday between Christmas and New Years, but with both falling on a Wednesday this year, not sure when/if this is actually going to happen.

I use Deluxe and have an extensive list of investments. What type of investments do you have? The download Deluxe version works fine, including uploads from brokerage accounts. If you use the online version of TT, you will need Premier, which I used for years. The sale will probably return a few times before April. I can never file until March or April due to 1099 revisions.
Here is the TurboTax Desktop version comparison

https://turbotax.intuit.com/perso...e/desktop/

And those extra features available in Premier but not Deluxe are what I need.

Of course, I would love to start input the tax data and have a better picture of what it's going to be like for my tax return but I don't mind to wait a bit for the sales to happen again too.

If I do some trading on robinhood and webull and have a rental property…will deluxe work for me or do I need premier version?

You can see the complete list of partners that Turbotax supports for import here : https://www.intuit.com/partners/f...8-partners

Coinbase does not appear on the list unless it is being called something else

Deluxe (desktop) can import from the same set of financial institutions as Premier (desktop) - that is not a difference between the two versions.

Not sure what you are looking at but if you read the web page you linked to you will notice the only difference between Deluxe and Premier is the amount of "help" that TurboTax offers for various subjects, there is no actual difference where it says you must have Premier to do XYZ on your return.

e..g "Additional help for investment sales such as stocks, bonds, royalties, mutual funds, employee stock plans and other investment types"

Deluxe supports all investments types such as stocks, bonds, options, futures, K-1 partnerships etc - the only thing premier does is give you extra help on these subjects.

Home & Business has this bullet: "Designed for the self-employed and small businesses, including independent contractors, consultants and freelancers" I have entered my self-employed information into Deluxe for years, it has everything needed to complete the return.

If you need extra help and want to get that help from Intuit (rather than the many sources available on the internet) then fine but people that say they NEED premier are just being fooled by Intuit marketing - Deluxe has everything you need.

10am EST - No sale yet on Amazon.

Costco 1/18 sale may be best bet now. All come with that $10 add-on. [intuit.com]

Premier $64.99 (after $18 off)
Deluxe /w State $44.99 (after $11 off)
Deluxe $36.99 (after $11 off)

I'll be curious how much the Deluxe->Premier upgrade is inside the app, but with the $10 Upgrade add-on it may bring Premier down to $54.99. {edited later: No, not cheaper}

edit: Last year it was either $35 [intuit.com] or $39 [intuit.com] to go Deluxe to Premier.

"""TurboTax upgrade: You can upgrade directly within TurboTax to a higher Desktop version and pick up where you left off. (Product upgrade does not apply to Home & Business and Business products.)"""
edit: There is also this fine print: "In-product add-on prices are subject to change and are expected to increase in March 2025. "

Well, damn. Last year I grabbed it with the November deal, but I wasn't around that day this year, so I was planning to get it with the usual after-Christmas sale. Now it's not looking as promising.

I thought for sure we'd see it by today (Saturday) at the latest, since in the past it's never gone much beyond the Saturday after Christmas. But now I'm thinking Amazon isn't going to do it.

I'm guessing if Amazon doesn't do the sale by the 1st of January, it's probably not going to happen.

Since it's usually on Wednesday between Christmas and New Year maybe they will just do it on New Years this year since it's on Wednesday. Still could be a chance.

All the IRS forms are available in Deluxe version but they're also available in IRS website. The difference between those versions (or you can download the forms from IRS website and fill up the form yourself instead of using the TurboTax) are those 'helps' that TT provided. If everything are the same and the none of the helps that TT provided are useful, i will just download the forms and fill them up myself to save some more bucks. Another example is it's like saying I can drive my prius moving from point A to point B and who else need other more expensive cars? Some people may need a SUV as they want to sit higher to have a better view of the road or some want a more muscular car such that they can merge into freeway lane faster than a prius can do. I'm not saying you're wrong with your choice, it's just not universal true for everyone needs. I also don't want to provide too much of my financial background as i'm not seeking any financial advice here. Just IMHO.

If there is no deal, I might consider switching to TaxFreeUSA (federal is free but not state) which seems to be good from what I read in the reviews assuming that you are familiar with doing your own taxes and reporting the same schedules or IRS forms that you did in the previous years. If you have a new schedules or new IRS forms or a new unfamiliar tax event to fill up, might be good to research it first or just buy turbotax, learn from it and move to TaxFreeUSA the following year. Still debating....
