All it really does is send hot water over a basket that is heated by copper coils. It doesn't have a timer, clock or features as modern coffee makers have.
It also has plastic touching all over the water (although BPA free, even the Tritan Plastic which is touted as "BPA Free" since technically it is BPA free) but most polymers, including Tritan, contain materials with estrogenic activity just as not as disruptive as BPA. sidenote: not sure if this is made from tritan but it is still bpa-free plastic polymer.
This isn't a rant about the plastic but trying to understand the price point and features this coffee maker has over the modern-day coffee makers. I know people have said this has lasted over 5+ years with a NL manufacturer's warranty of 5 years.
So before the moccamaster masters flame me, I am legitimately asking since:
The unit itself looks very underwhelming. I thought it had an automatic burr grinder at first, but it was just a water reservoir.
It uses plastic that touches hot water.
The reservoir cover looks to have a huge gap that might let things fall inside (bugs or dirt or dust)
The plastic housing basket that appears to hold the coffee seems like the same thing they use at a $10-200+ coffee maker
Doesn't look to have a timer auto start or clock or programmable features
The arm is off center so only parts of the grounds closest to the unit will get properly saturated. The result is water will oversaturate pne half of the grounds, and under saturate the other half. Way to remedy this is to reduce the grind size to slow down the flow, or to manually baby sit the flow stop in order to force it to bloom. Neither of these are desirable.
Tons of reviews claim that the coffee is underwhelming and I am guessing it is because of the design of the arm so you must bloom manually which is a PITA for a machine that costs this much.
Pros
Quality construction of the steel and copper
Many coffee snobs love this machine for what reason tho?
Made in Europe if that means anything
5 year warranty
Durable and many people have claimed to have it lasted over 5-10+ years
Carafe looks to be superior
Can anyone enlighten me? I am seriously curious and I am in the market for a good coffee brewer/maker.
