I am an advanced hobbyist woodworker, and I have (at last count), 9 different wood routers. I use them for a variety of things, but to be honest I have a bit of a router problem...

Anyway, if I had to have only one router, it would be this one.

It is a great balance between price, power, features, and ergonomics.

I actually bought a reconditioned one from ebay and the motor was f'ed after I tried to do a dovetail across the middle of a pine plank. Hear the motor spazz out while hitting a hard knot in the wood. Is the router not powerful enough to do that or did I just get a dud? Anyway, I bought this deal but just want to know.

If you're considering this router, get this combo kit. I deeply regret just getting the router because now I want the plunge base + case and it's egregiously expensive to buy individually.

If this is your first router, be aware this has an on/off switch and not triggers. I personally find it very awkward to turn on the switch while holding the router in position with the other hand, on/off is required if you want to use it in a table. If you want this router with triggers, look at the MRF23EVS. I'll likely "upgrade" to that router at some point and help rationalize it by getting the plunge base combo that time.
I just want to make picture frames and other diy projects (large picture frames, mind you). Would this be overkill for my first and probably only router?

Went in on it. I have been thinking about starting woodworking for a while, and have some other tools.

Will I actually do it? ... well that's a different question

I have a DIY project to build a couple of dozen plywood drawer boxes for garage storage. I also have a table saw and a battery palm router. Is this a better tool to help make box bottom grooves?

The thing about woodworking is that there are always many ways to do everything, and the "best" way may depend on what you are doing and what you have. I assume you are making grooves in all the sides to accept a bottom piece of plywood, and I would first think to do this on the table saw. You may need more than one pass to make the groove wide enough for for your bottom material, shifting the fence over slightly. The bottom of the groove will not show, so no need to get a flat-bottomed blade. Try your setup on scrap wood to dial it in.
