I have the Sony WH-1000XM3 set. Thinking it's time to upgrade and trying to decide on these, XM4 or XM5. Any thoughts? Mostly used for ANC on flights, listening to music / streaming. Not calls typically.

the 4 and 5 both are a bit better than the 3, 4 probably gets the win from me. BUT, for comfort, you can't beat Bose. So Bose is still my favorite. Have you owned one before? The sound is different than Sony, so be prepared for that

I've personally used the XM3 extensively. I own two pairs and used them daily for over 5 years. The XM4 and XM5 are a step down in terms of ANC, with the XM5 being the biggest step down, relying more on passive noise blocking than really much ANC.

Personally the XM3 were the best for ANC and now the Bose Ultras are better. I now own two Bose Ultras. They do have slightly higher clamping force than the old QC35 IIs but are still very comfy. The XM3s got hot after two hours or so.

How is the durability of these? Was debating between these and the regular QC. When I tried the ultras in store they felt kinda plasticky, wasn't sure how they would hold up.

I have the old QC35 II which is the predecessor of the regular QC. The QC35II honestly feels lighter than the new QC Ultras, which feel a bit more robust. The downside is that the clamping force is higher on the Ultras.

But to be honest all of these will last if you treat them well, not as long as if you abuse them. Even the Sony XM3s I have lasted over 5 years.

The real difference is between these headphones and cheaper level ones like Anker. Even the best Ankers are less durable, even if they do still offer excellent quality.
