Inexpensive way to add internal storage to a desktop to be used for backups of important data without taking up a lot of space.
Works as an OS drive for a home server. You can keep all of your important data on separate drives. That way you can more easily troubleshoot OS issues without fear of losing your important data.
I suspect this would be a cheap way to add mirrored metadata cache vdev to TrueNAS for small files.
Repurposing an old machine that has an NVMe slot but no NVMe drive, or failed drive.
Using a Raspberry Pi 5 with an NVMe hat.

There's lots of reasons for a drive like this. None are related to high performance. But are things you could do with these.

A bunch of older Kioxia 256GB nvme drives on eBay for this price. Models with dram cache, high end for when they were released. I got one a few weeks ago.

This really only makes financial sense if you're using it as a boot drive in something that needs big capacity in spinny disks or just to hold an OS and a few apps like a NAS or NVR or other network appliance type use.

Everything is made in China yes but I don't want to order something that is coming straight from China. Do you get what I'm saying?
I mean I get you but pretty much almost every tech goods start their shipping from China lol.

Then it just sits in US warehouse until you place an order.

This would be good for something like TrueNAS.

I think there's a lot of computers out there that will never see 100 GB of storage used. Even the computer I type this from (work laptop) probably only has 1-2 GB beyond the OS, browser, and Microsoft Office.
