For some reason Chase charges more tax than Costco.

Costco is re-stocked on the ethernet model for $135. It came out to only ~$4 more at Costco with a better return policy.
Bad deal folks. Chase point redemption is best spent at 1.5 cents per point at minimum. We used to get better rewards and flights for more then $0.015 long ago
Not everyone has a premium Chase card that gets them 1.5 cents per point. For someone who only has a Freedom or Ink Cash, they only get 1 cent per point.

Also, you don't have to pay with points, you can get this by paying with your credit card.

Agreed. Costco better returns may as well go that route. I was hoping for the $99 deal to come back but alas

As a multiple Apple TV owner over the past decade+, I recommend having a look at the new Google TV Streamer. It's as fast, if not faster than, the ATV. Better cross-platform capabilities. Lots of free TV channels included. And it can handle Matter & Thread devices as well. All for $99 (reg. price)

Ethernet capable?

The Chase Apple Store is handled by a third party reseller and many people have had problems dealing with them. Hard pass.

I m not sure if the new model will have much improvement over this one. The picture is very sharp if you pair it with 4k tv and correct calibration.

The interface is so lean, no bloatware like from firestick. The remote can control your tv and volume.

Gaming - they could easily drop an M chip in it and make it a real competitor for casual gaming

1. I'd be surprised if they devalue their M chip like that. Apple fans would be pissed if a $100 streaming box had the same chip as their desktop.

2. I don't think anyone has succeeded with a gaming STB. I mean, like, ever, right? Steam, Stadia, Luna, Philips CD-I. I'd be surprised if they touched it with a 10ft pole.

But fun idea nonetheless

Is it still useful as a streaming device if I don't have apple TV+? Can I install Kodi on it and is the performance good? I had kodi installed on varies android TV and fireTV sticks/cubes and they all sluggish running Kodi.

Don't think it is worth it. At this point this Apple TV is using a chip that is 3 generations old. There isn't really much of a difference between this version and the previous version besides remote control. Apple should have really used this last version to promote gaming and have added gaming controllers to turn it into a gaming system. Hoping next version really pushes their Apple Arcade, gaming controllers and maybe have a M2-M3 chip for better performance when gaming.

M2 chip AppleTv for $100? That would be well below cost. The M4 mini is already a steal at $600. M2 and some other cut corners would not save $500 off that.

Costco is $134.99 for 128gb so this is only 8 bucks cheaper?

I see Costco have the same model at 144 not 134 now, is there a link to the cheaper page?

It is proven to be slower than the Apple TV. Your comment here is just silly.

For clarification, MediaTek MT8696 is the CPU, same as in the Fire Stick 4K max, vs the A15 in Apple's device.

1. I don't think it'll cost $100 anymore, unfortunately, but they've been putting the same chip in the Apple TV as the iPad Pro for a while, they just haven't updated the Apple TV in forever.
2. I think a better way to think about it is how PS2 made its way into so many homes - because it was only marginally more expensive than a standalone DVD player, a lot of people bought them for that reason. A lot of Apple TVs ended up in houses as DirecTV boxes back in the day too. Similar thing - if you're going to spend $100 on a high-end, 4k set-top box, why not spend $150 on one that can game in 4k with any 4 $20 bluetooth controllers? Pay $7/mo for our "Apple Arcade" subscription too!
