It's essentially a floating stick that reads the subtle changes in magnetic forces instead of using contact switches or potentiometers reading electrical voltage to figure how much force is being applied to any given direction. The problem with the classic potentiometer or arcade style switch/pad based is the wide dead zone from center/zero that the stick needs to avoid issues like calibration (for cheap joysticks) or drift (higher end joysticks with smaller zones of dead input space around the center position) that still fail to hold the joystick in the right position and maintain their calibration)

It's just a favorable type of variable input joystick that doesn't suffer drift. While having a near zero dead space around center position. So even the slightest push will result in the desired input.

PS4 controllers require a bit of tweaking if you want to use them wirelessly with PC. Plugged in should be less problematic. I used to use a DualSense(PS5 controller) on my PC, but it developed stick drift in less than a year with moderate usage. I don't know if DualShock 4 controllers have similar drift issues, but I will NEVER buy another Sony controller again.

The Hall Effect sticks in the 8bitdo will almost never get stick drift, although it's still possible, but they will be much more reliable long term. If you like the PS style controller I would go 8bitdo. Another bonus is that most PC games default to XBOX button markings, so there's less confusion when the game tells you to press "A, B, X, or Y" and you look down to find "X, Square, Triangle, Circle."

The nice thing about buying this product new is that is comes with a code for 1 mo game pass ultimate. i've been considering picking up another controller i don't really need just for that

I've been using a PS4 for quite a while now, and luckily, I haven't had any issues with stick drift. The back buttons are intriguing, especially alongside the 8BitDo controller for its D-pad, which gives a great retro vibe for side-scrolling games. I also agree that the YXAB buttons are pretty appealing. Being a PlayStation user for 25 years, I've been using a PS4 controller on my PC with DS4, and the app has worked flawlessly for me. The only hassle is occasionally hunting down a charger cable!

Darn, I had to scroll down to the specifications to see it's not compatible with Xbox 360. When I just saw "Xbox compatible" without any other info I had some hope this would be a good near-OEM controller for my old 360. One can hope!

Is using the DS4 confusing or any way complicated? I know there's a one time fee to it so not sure if it's worth it.

I didn't really go into a deep configuration but for paring my ps4 to my pc via ds4 it's very easy

There should be no one-time fee.
Using wired, is straight forward if you follow the instructions. Wireless may take an additional step but works.
