Hmmm, pixelating the low-polygon Odo goo ... vs every single hair in Nagus Zek's untamed ear bush ... that's a toughy.

Although I get what is being said here.. SD is equal to DVD in terms of format.
However video compression for streaming is where the two will differ in quality.

Deep Space Nine never got a Blu-ray transfer or HDX on Vudu / Fandango.

So for those that would hold out in hopes the HDX version will go on sale..
Just be aware.. SD is currently the only version to own DS9 digitally.

I doubt after all these years Paramount has found a way to enhance the source material as DS9 and Voyager were both shot on film and then converted to video tape at 480p.

It may happen one day but wont be anytime soon.. Star Trek in the hands of Paramount's current regime as well as Disney with Star Wars, they have no clue on the right direction to take this franchise.

Really is a shame that all those 80s and 90s shows were mastered on VHS tapes and will be SD forever. Though I suppose we might get some shitty AI upscales at some point.

Meanwhile shows from the 60s and 70s look great in digital HD.

I'd be curious to know if anyone in the 80s recognized the switch to VHS meant losing the future opportunity to create a higher-res version. Many shows including DS9 were shot on film, why edit and finish the show on VHS? I assume it was cheaper, but I wonder by how much. With all the production costs of a show, were the VHS savings really worth locking your show into 480p? Or did it just never occur to them that TV would go high-resolution one day?

Picard? Strange New Worlds? Section 31? Better than not doing anything with it.

DS9 in SD quality is still a better show than most shows in 32K Ultra Digital HD. One of the best shows ever made!

We actually just finished watching it and although I had it on Paramount Plus it was pretty unwatchable. It's unfortunate because there's such a huge fan ase committed to this show that the upscaled project that's available on torrent sites in 1080p is WAY better quality than what I purchased... And I didn't have to watch a stupid commercial before every episode like P+.

I agree, I think the upscale fan projects are doing amazing work. I saw the Stargate unicorn 1080 upscale project results and it is awesome. Sad that it takes dedicated fans to make a meaningful upscaled version. I bought the ds9 SD version just to have it.

Yes, the bitrate given to SD tv shows is often too low. I recently bought the DS9 DVD series for this reason. I also like to RIP and convert them to MKV while using a very light unsharp mask filter for improved perceived sharpness.

This was the height of Star Trek and it never really recovered.

Not really a special effects show, don't overthink the format.

If it were in HD then maybe I'd buy it. But I'm not buying digital SD anymore for anything
