The "list" price of $1699 deserves a bit of a breakdown.

This 16GB/1TB option was made available as a standard configuration from Apple in March '24 for $1999.

Since the introduction of the M4 MacBooks last month, all new Macs come standard with at least 16GB of RAM (previously a $200 upgrade), so when comparing to new Macs, you should basically ignore $200 worth of MSRP for any Mac that previously required you to spend that much to upgrade to 16GB.

Which gets this specific config down to a real-world $1799 price point, to be compared to the M4 series. Obviously this model is 13 months old, so it's common for major retailers to reduce the MSRP by $100 (like Apple does with prior years' iPhones) with a 'new' model that's one generation old but still available in many channels.

Which is how we get to the math $1699 MSRP. Now, knock $400 off that, and you get today's sale.

Even with Education pricing, a 14" M4 MacBook Pro with 1TB is $1699, which does come with 2 more Performance cores, another TB4 port on the right, and slightly better screen. But that's pretty much it!

So if you're comparing this to a similar spec 14" Pro with M4, this $400 savings is substantial, IMO.

You can't easily overlook the extra storage option. For most its the number one issue we have with buying apple computers. 1 tb should be the minimum in any computer and to get that with a new mac you end up sometime paying almost double the price for it (like the new m4 mac mini). Now i am speaking for myself but i would always take the extra storage for the 20% extra performance because to be honest even the M3 is still a great efficient ship and most of us won't even fully utilize its capabilities but i assure you we will utilize the extra storage. Hopefully i made sense.

My mistake the default on the 16gb is the space gray that's why it was $1399

How is this a good deal compared to the 1399 M4 version that was just on sale? Seems like other than the storage bump it's a generation behind for 100 dollars? I don't mean that to sound nasty, just asking the question to understand.

Good points, I'd also note that the M4 chip, base included, has the best single core store among any processor out there. This is the speed you'll notice rendering web pages, using most programs - things are just instant on it. M4 is on another level

I have a mint condition 2020 Air M1 8GB 512GB SSD that still meets my needs but this is tempting. Can the PayPal BestBuy 5% + chase FF PayPal 5% be used for this?

This is a good deal with the 1TB drive, just keep in mind this is the regular M3 chip. It only has 2 thunderbolt ports and only supports 2 external displays when the lid is closed.

You have to go to the M3/M4 Pro chips to get >2 displays, which means a $1999 MSRP or $1699(rare) to $1799 sale price. So, another $400 at minimum, and that price would have half the storage of this deal.

Geekbench is exaggerating synthetic performance vs. real world performance. The M4's feel slightly faster than M3. You're not getting the performance bump when we went from slow Intel to Apple Silicon.
