My vote is he needs both
I spent the last decade and a half working as a DoD contractor and working closely with the trades. Everything from Mechanical to electrical and the building trades. Every single one of the companies had lay offs just about every 3 years. Contracts and jobs come and go. They all had slumps and slow times when they would need to lay off employees. The trades are not immune from lay offs. The few who were able to remain employed during these lay offs were the ones that had a special ability to be both a salesman and a skilled tradesman. Because they could go from working the site to also working behind a desk/phone.

Get your kid one of these, skip the "college fund", and send them to a tech school. They'll end up a better and smarter person than most.

More job security, too, as long as they're reliable.

Every college grad I know has been laid off multiple times, but all the guys I knew in high school who went into the trades are making six figure salaries and have remained comfortably employed throughout every recession.

I agree. The toddler engine is good for 1 time and then they may get bored. Of course, that drill is pretty cool.

Looking at the US gov wage estimates [bls.gov], your highschool friends picked the right subfield, worked extra hard, or got lucky:

Management Occupations $137,750
Computer and Mathematical Occupations $113,140
Architecture and Engineering Occupations $99,090
Business and Financial Operations Occupations $90,580

Construction and Extraction Occupations $61,500
Installation, Maintenance, and Repair Occupations $58,500
