I had not seen these at nearby Costco locations. Any indication as to how widely (or recently) these were carried?

This is part of the Christmas toy aisle that Costco brings out October/November. They end up selling out all of it by December but a few stores have some remaining. My local Costco has no more. Very YMMV.
