What kind of material is the surface of this controller made of? If it's that faux rubbery suede material then it's going to eventually rub off and degrade over time which is going to be a hard pass for me though.

It's a standard XBL controller so it's plastic. The petroleum rubber you speak of is on the backs of Elite Controllers. Yes that part does peel off on it's own over time.
