Since these Dell laptops are sold to large government departments and corporation, they're typically sold in lots of 100+. They're therefore sold differently, with volume discounts of 30-50%. No one ever purchased a Latitude at the grossly inflated "Suggested Retail Price".

The Latitude 5-series are rather heavy, but they're built stronger (hinges, etc.).

But the Latitude 5XXX line has some models that were designed badly, in order to quickly push out large volumes to large scale customers. Some were so bad that places shipped entire models back to Dell because of overheating, freezing, etc. Dell replaced many motherboards, which is why so many ended up at FedEx Recycling ("Dell Refurbished") and Dell's own Dell Outlet.

Before you purchase a particular Latitude 5-series model, please do your research for that model on Reddit, Dell Communities, etc. We've purchased many items from FedEx Recycling but we lost twice on two separate Latitude 5-series models that were completely inoperative outside of the 90-day warranty period - between 6 and 12 months. That was a $600 loss for us.

Consider other Dell models instead, alternative warranties, or purchasing directly from Dell Outlet.

YMMV

my Latitude 5421 also suffers from thermal issues. The 11th gen runs hot, even on idle 50 degrees C is common and when I start working on it the temperature just shoots up. It even reaches a 100 degrees C during the day at which point parts of the hardware just shut down and things like USB peripherals just disconnect.

i also have a Dell 5421 that my job gave me. The fans are obnoxiously loud so I was considering applying my own thermal paste.

Hi Folks, We have about 70+ Latitude 5401 laptops in the company i work for and we have been hit by the series of overheating of the laptops. The laptops is used by developers and tends to heat up whenever the CPU or memory usage increase and causes the fan to spin at its maximum RPM and you could hear it struggling to dissipate the heat that is produced.

Most of the above is generic, conjecture, and / or repeating things other people have said (mostly 3rd hand themselves). Complaints you could find about ANY laptop.

First hand experience: used a 5420 for 3 years during a company lease. Worked as it should have. Fan can get loud but also no company laptops are shipping in the CPU restricted "balanced" or "battery saving" modes...they aren't even options normally. Try switching any consumer grade laptop to "performance" mode then doing something CPU / RAM heavy for HOURS....bet the fan gets loud too. Crazy, right? Especially one with a legit laptop CPU like a this i5-11500H (as opposed to something like a i5-1135g7).

My major concern would be battery health and Windows 10 being W10's end of life is next year. Will this pass MS's upgrade checker? Probably? (plenty of ways to force an upgrade regardless).

Not sure I would spend $300 on a 3 year old laptop though. I will say I liked my 5420 battery than my current 5440....that thing is SLOW doing the exact same job. Thank god I get to upgrade it (reads sticker on laptop).....Oct of 2026 (sheds tears)

There seem to be a couple of listings on ebay that get posted here often. Search slickdeals for the other listing if this one is no longer in stock

My latitude from 2010 or 2012 is still kicking. Built like a rock.

Will probably install w11 tiny or Linux mint on it soon.
