Would that be something that would impact the cameras?

Cameras would be a huge concern as well since technically the manufacturer could easily access either live or archived footage via the cloud or add backdoors via firmware updates. I probably wouldn't put these in any sensitive areas and would isolate them from the rest of your network.

Any alternatives that are better?

I have a bunch of Wyze cams that I was looking to replace because their new software is shit. I constantly have to login to my cameras again and again.

I actually really like the tapo cams (so far 5 that I've gotten are all outdoor). The app loads much faster and cameras have been rock solid with the solar cams dropping at most a few percent and then going back to 100 even on cloudy days. This bit of news is unfortunate, but I'm gonna wait n watch what unfolds. I already have them on a separate network n will probably not have any indoor ones. They're much better than the wyze they replaced.

Camera is not so bad as routers as router/switch has access to ALL of your traffic and... search "TP-Link data offload". Thats been known for ages.

No wonder they are cheap and giving away all the AI detection features free others charge for. China subsidized spying tools!

why would anyone care if some random person in China can see you? You think you are that important of a person? Our own government has more information on you than you would ever be comfortable with.

My Chinese guy is cool. Sometimes he'll see me throw a crumpled up piece of paper into the trash can from 10 feet away and he'll blink the lights on the camera like it's the camera flashes in NBA Jam.
