I do believe it's personal, based on how it's used and someone's financial situation.

- If you're doing anything taxing, M2/8GB might not make you happy. I had a similar spec MB Air M2/8GB that stunk for work. I used a lot of SaaS apps and did research, so lot's of browser tabs. And Zoom calls would have choppy video. I had to reboot daily to make sure things would keep running smooth. YMMV!

- $500 (if you buy student discount or at Microcenter etc) is 66% more than $300. If spending $300 on a computer is already a lot for you or budgets are tight, the extra $200 is a pretty big deal (and with the Costco warranty, this adds some extra protection without AppleCare). If you already aren't batting an eye at $500, and you want the added value of the new M4 and 16gb, then you're going to lean that way.

Is it right for you? Maybe. I think it's a matter of intended use and financial situation.

Hot take: if you don't know how much RAM you need, 8GB might just be sufficient for your needs. I still use my M1 Air w/ 8GB every day - it's gotten more usable with Chrome's new active tab suspension/management.

Agreed. 8GB and 256Gb is doodoo.

I GUESS it could stand in for an AppleTV, but then, just get and AppleTv.
This is much better than AppleTV since it has much more APP!

Recommend checking your local Craigslist/OfferUp/fb marketplace. I picked up an M2 Pro/16gb/1tb for $600 a few weeks ago. Took the trade off of more storage over faster processor with an M4 base.

When M4 s are discounted to Mid to Upper 400s, why M2?

Was curious and checked same day Costco (Instacart) and also had $25 off. Couldn't figure out why but for me it worked out to almost the same as buying in store after tax and tip. If only I was in the market for it lol

You can boot from an external drive on Apple Silicon. You just can't use Apple Pay or Apple Intelligence.
What he says is true though. You CAN boot on an external drive, IF the built in SSD is functional. If the internal SSD fails, you will no longer be able to boot off an external SSD as the security enclave requires the internal SSD to function as storage even though it's not the boot drive.

PS you can use apple intelligence even while booting off an external drive with a terminal command.

Responsible budgeting.
Buying to your Need, not to the specs.

Like gramps. Email, web, YouTube.
And his processor is slow, so a faster m4 ain't benefiting him, ever.

A ton of typical everyday tasks aren't benefiting even if you got 1000 core cpus, so users who don't tax their systems won't notice much between 5 years old and the latest.

And some can put the difference to other things - a nice dinner date, flying out to see the parents, etc.

Costco app showed available at Deerfield OH. But none available when actually reached there even though app still showed as available. I had better hopes from the Costco app. The attendant said available at Florence KY even though app showed not available. Went there, none available. Frustrating and waste of time.

Ya - I've got a M2 MacBook Air with 24GB RAM and 512GB. I've actually ran out of memory for some tasks. I do memory intensive things (3D modeling, and whatnot.)

I know that's not everyone, but I know that 8GB is no longer good enough. Apple agrees - they've gone to 16GB min for their M4 series.
Yeah a Mini PersonalComputer isn't supposed to be for intensive processing. It's like comparing an i3 to i7 for 3D modeling and rendering...

It is a good price, but I still can't justify buying it because I don't find myself in a situation where I need it. My job relies heavily on Windows, so I don't have much use for a Mac. On the rare occasions when I need to work in a Mac environment, I simply use my iPad, set it to Stage Manager, and connect it to my monitor. While iPadOS isn't macOS, I have found it sufficient for my needs.

just to be clear, a lot of apps are designed to allocate all the available ram even if they don't need it at that moment. just because your computer is 100% ram usage doesnt mean its an issue.
on the otherhand, it is true that websites are now being designed in ways that consume more ram. so even people who just browse the web could benefit from more ram.
