I do believe it's personal, based on how it's used and someone's financial situation.

- If you're doing anything taxing, M2/8GB might not make you happy. I had a similar spec MB Air M2/8GB that stunk for work. I used a lot of SaaS apps and did research, so lot's of browser tabs. And Zoom calls would have choppy video. I had to reboot daily to make sure things would keep running smooth. YMMV!

- $500 (if you buy student discount or at Microcenter etc) is 66% more than $300. If spending $300 on a computer is already a lot for you or budgets are tight, the extra $200 is a pretty big deal (and with the Costco warranty, this adds some extra protection without AppleCare). If you already aren't batting an eye at $500, and you want the added value of the new M4 and 16gb, then you're going to lean that way.

Is it right for you? Maybe. I think it's a matter of intended use and financial situation.

Hot take: if you don't know how much RAM you need, 8GB might just be sufficient for your needs. I still use my M1 Air w/ 8GB every day - it's gotten more usable with Chrome's new active tab suspension/management.

WHY do you say Apple AI? Apple AI works just fine on my 8GB M3. Why do you think Apple AI meant Apple jumped to 16GB Macs?

Apple excels at the upsell opportunity but the volume of 8/256 and now 16/256 sales suggests that most do believe that is, in fact, enough.

My daily use is a M1 MacBook 8/256 and does all I throw at it quite easily - web, Microsoft business suite, VDI, and photo management. I use iCloud for more storage and the 8 GB of ram has never presented an issue in the ~2-3 years of use everyday.

I'm guessing my use case covers roughly 90% of adults.

Agree on storage, but not on ram. M chips are superior (unified ram) in that they are more efficient than regular chips and therefore don't need as much ram. 8gb is plenty for most. 256gb storage however is not enough. Thats Apple's way to try and get more $$$ by making u choose higher specs.

That ship sailed in 2015, the year of the last upgradeable Mac laptop (I don't know about Minis, though, only to say that nothing Apple makes is upgradeable anymore)

For all those who say the difference between the price of this deal and M4 is not significantly important/deal breaker...And this older model does 99% of the work a layman needs or 70% of all technically the new one can do...I must add: "You either know NOTHING about Apple's general policy towards great hardware they make, in relation to time (As the profit taking is taken out of the hand of Mac, or you don't know anything about AI and the difference of what M4 does, then the wave of AI dominant life we are currently facing and worst, in next immediate few years to come.

Otherwise, have a nice day, and hope you find a copy of this $150 money-saving deal for today and maybe more days to come before you learn more about Apple

As a person who never sees the value in apple products, I have not had any issues with my 8GB M1 mini or my 8GB me air. I hate apple intelligence and want 16GB because who would not, it I buy apple as inexpensively as I can to avoid the apple tax.

The most I through at these machines is OBS and lumafusion. I use my windows laptop and desktops that are Stronger for work. That's the biggie difference for me. Apple gets on my nerves, but I find personal use experience excellent. These were supposed to last years... But I am tempted to just go m4 on both and let them last years... This intelligence BS is going to kill us with ram use 😮 💨😡... I truly believe 16GB being the new standard is actually the new minimum... they are now selling 24GB and more for a reason. their prices are not holding like they use to. I regret buying my M3 air in August. I'm not touching this m2 deal with a stick... well, $200 maybe... but still will be in the same hole.

would love to get a new windows arm device, but we are still not quite there yet. this is really a time to spend a lot of money on a pro and use it for years or just wait a while.
