Most of the time I use it as a regular controller while looking at the TV, but I will admit that it's pretty useful that I can get up and walk to another room. If I know the oven is going to beep "soon" I can head in and play until I need to pull something out.
If you have a the highest end PS subscription you can also stream games directly to it... but it's very much still in beta.
