Remember you need a ps plus premium subscription to stream on the portal so the cost is more than double if you don't already have plus.

Just went to my local Staples, and they had 1 instock for $129.99. It's not advertised in store for that price though

Friend doesn't have a PS5. If he buys this and PS plus is it worth it?
I also have a Staples reward coupon for $10 back on every $50
Actually, remote play from your already owned PS5 is free, PS+ subscription is only for cloud-gaming without a PS5. Since your friend doesn't have a PS5 though, the game library of new and retro games on PS+ Premium would be the only way he/she could game on the Portal.

That said, I always recommend people try setting up Sony's Remote Play app on their phone to first see how the network performance is, and then buy the Portal if you want the 8" colorful IPS display and controller ergonomics/haptics. Personally, I paid a bit more to get the Steam Deck, and I feel like I got a lot more return on investment, but there's three tiers of investment for you (Cheap to stream to existing phone/tablet, mid-tier to stream to Portal or a Logitech GCloud, and then high tier with the Steam Deck or another PC handheld).

You need PS+ Premium for cloud gaming, yes, but you don't need even PS+ Essential for PS5 remote play. So, as long as the game is installed on your PS5, you don't need the PS+ subscription.

That said, I quit PS+ because of the price increase, and I'm more than happy streaming to my Steam Deck. My OLED model can stream with about twice the battery runtime of the Portal, not to mention all the games it can play without an internet connection.
When you say remote play are you talking about in the same house or on the go? I was under the impression that the big update was supposed to be that you can stream games no matter where you are.

I was under the impression it was basically like the Wii U where you could play what was on the system on the tablet but not once you left your home network.

Incorrect - as long as your ps5 as at in "sleep" mode, you can turn it on/off and play via the cloud anywhere you have wifi, effectively

You can stream your games from your turned on ps5 outside of your home network. For single player games this works okay, but for online competitive games like COD, good luck.

Lol. That's a different demographic. It's completely useless for people who want to play PS5 games.

That's what I used to think, too, (because they did a poor job explaining it in marketing) but you can even just use the PS Remote app on your phone and play it anywhere that you have WiFi. I've played my PS5 on my phone, while the console was at home and I was at a friend's house.

From other sales in the past, if the store quantity is under 2 it will show as out of stock online for in store pickup.
