I think this is overpriced for a 6" head kit, but from my first hand experience, I wouldn't suggest these 6" head "drum kits" to anyone, regardless of age or price. The 6" heads are very frustrating to play for a beginner because they are such small targets. The surface area for the 8" is nearly double that of the 6" head making it *much* easier to hit.
The surface area of a drum head (circle) with a 6" diameter is ~28 square inches.
The surface area of a circle with an 8" diameter is ~50 square inches.
I own an Alesis 6" kit and attempted to use it for about a year. My intention was to use it just for Rock Band as an upgrade from their rubber heads to something more real. The problem is that the 6" heads are tiny, and even smaller than the stock Rock Band pads.
I've since upgraded to a different Alesis with 8" heads (Nitro) and it was like night and day. I'm now learning to drum for real.
An Alesis Nitro Turbo kit is about the same as this (non impact bass pedal, very basic drum brain, no options for expansion), but with 8" heads, and it has been on sale for around the same price a few times recently (currently $250, but only by phone and based on availability: https://www.guitarcenter.com/Ales...cid=LP9396). You won't get the stool or the headphones. The headphones in the 6" kit are terrible, but the stool is OK if a little wobbly.
