What would be a purpose for holes this size in that material? Genuinely asking because I might take advantage of this ahead of a bathroom renovation.

I think it would be for lag bolts based on the sizing. All of them are too small for any plumbing penetrations you would have.

holes in tile/stone for grab bars, towel racks, shower glass brackets, etc.
