Seems like a cheap webcam would be easier.

This would be a feature id pay NOT to have. On the other hand, my OCD demands any tech with available holes or ports be filled. I warn my visitors too.

Probably won't work, and even if you found one that did a firmware update would probably brick it.

Why not? Have you tried?

In the days of Google Duo you could hook up some Logitech webcams to Android TV OS and it would work just fine.

You warn your visitors about your proclivity to demand to fill their ports and holes?

Yes. Not all the models but a couple and with several webcam brands: Logitech, Microsoft, etc.

They get detected and not work at best or aren't even detected at worst

I have the meta portal TV that does the same thing. I find it incredibly useful when talking to my family abroad. Based on that, I think this is a good idea. Given this is a Sony product - and built for Bravia - I am pretty sure it will work better than generic web cams.

That's a far cry from "will brick it"

Another feature you can enable is the tv will turn off if it doesn't detect motion for a set amount of time. Good for people who forget to turn off their the tv

My Sony television had come with a similar adapter which I never connected. However, I was surprised to find that something that otherwise looked like a universal webcam with a USB connection wasn't actually standard/functional for usage on a PC.

Good luck!
