I am one of those louder voices in the other Red Pocket threads who couldn't get the local RP representative to confirm or deny that hotspotting/tethering is included on the 5GB eBay plan... and therefore concluded that it is NOT included.

I have an older 5GB plan on my phone from last Black Friday season. Got it on eBay. Paid $120 at the time. That plan included hotspotting without a datacap... meaning I could use all of my 5GB of data via a hotspot through my phone, and presuably the "unlimited" 2G data that RP includes when your monthly data allowance is exhausted.

I went ahead and bit the bullet a couple of weeks ago and renewed via the $160 eBay sale price (yeah, I'm out $40... oh well). I know from experience that when applying a code to your account, if the code is for the exact same plan that you're already on, the system is supposed to add 360 days to your existing expiration date. If the code is for a different plan, the old plan is terminated and your new plan expires 360 days from that day. Sure, I could wait until "termination day" and apply the code to not worry about it, but I might be busy, and if it's supposed to just add 360 days, why not do it now?

Since I wanted to confirm that the expiration date would extend out into January 2025 rather than early December 2024, I got a CSR with me in chat. He confirmed that my understanding was correct - same plan = +360 days. So when I applied the code and the date came out wrong, the CSR fixed it on the spot. I'm good until late January 2025.

But here's the thing..... the previous plan HAD hotspotting. The new plan probably DOES NOT have hotspotting (otherwise the local RP guy would've quickly confirmed that as a feature). But when I applied the current 5GB eBay code to an existing 5GB eBay RP account - my hotspotting continues to work without a hitch.

Bear in mind - one data point does NOT mean that I've somehow broken the code. But if you have an existing Red Pocket 5GB plan you paid for through RP's eBay store last year, and you buy an identical plan as a renewal.... if you have hotspotting before, there's every reason to believe you'll have hotspotting later too. Just don't change plans....

Caveat emptor, YMMV, all those disclaimers go here.

Dear Red Pocket,

I think it's time for a new marketing team. Whoever designed your marketing and pricing strategy this holiday season should be transitioned to another function…or firm. You lost many long term customers, and now you'll have to fight tooth and nail to replace them with new ones…If it's even possible at all. This was your New Coke moment.

I left Red Pocket a few years ago for Boost Mobile. I'm paying $45 every 3 months for 5GB/month on AT&T. Was thinking of coming back for this ~$10/month for 5GB on AT&T. What is your issue with them? Is it that they didn't have a deal this good for black Friday? I'd be frustrated if I bought a year long plan on black Friday last year then was forced to pay for 1 month at full price or buy another year for a higher cost. Is that what happened?

Generally how is Red Pocket these days? I don't know if it's my phone or Boost's SIM cards but I've had 2 SIM cards go bad with Boost in the last 6 months and every time it's at least a couple days without a phone.
I've been on RP since 2020. Always utilized their annual eBay plans with AT&T for two lines. 2 years each on two different data limit plans. No major issues with them as a cellular source. We are very basic users and only demand nonstop service, not high data speeds or allocations.

Historically they have always offered similar promos for Black Friday. This year they either decided to stop or just didn't think it thru. This particular plan had been $120 in previous years (no shipping charge either). This year they were $186 for Black Friday. After the apparent exodus, including me, they lowered to $166 about a few weeks ago. Now today, @ $126. To each his own to determine how sound a strategy this was. The funny thing is that given how RP utilized 360 day years, all users would eventually have an issue with 'plan creep' as their renewal dates creep forward. And given they held sales only 2-3 times a year and on only certain plans, and purchases had to be activated within 90 days, all users would eventually face a decision on renewing at full price. But RP decided to accelerate that issue to the masses.

In any event, I transitioned to U.S. Mobile.

I have NOT activated mine, I got 4 for $160. I canceled and bought at new price of $120 each.

Ya, that 360 day year is going to screw it up if they don't bring this deal back a few days earlier next year. I'm not really going to sweat it though, either I'll pay for 1 month or want to switch to a different MVNO by then. I'm iffy whether the phone I have is going to be good for another year or not anyway. May want to jump on one of those subsidized phone deals with another carrier by then.

Many years with redpocket as a basic user (1000min 1G 360 day). Moved on after RP started charging the ridiculous eBay shipping fee for renewal. I know that I can renew from its portal for the same price. But I see the final price is not competitive anymore with all those added administration fees.

I've got two numbers annual plan expiring beginning of May, each is $180, both have hotspot.
3gb data/mo CDMA verizon
5gb data/mo GSMa att
I tried to do the ebay thing last year, but there wasn't an exact annual plan available, so I just purchased the $180 plan on RP website.
I seems like this deal would work since there is a renewal option, but I'd have to renew a couple months before my current plan expires. but I'd still come out ahead assuming the hotspot carries over. I wish they'd be more clear about this.

The plans annual plans on RP website currently only offer hotspot with their unlimited plans
https://www.redpocket.com/annualplans

And this ebay deals says it's 61% off their $305.00 regular price, which doesn't correspond to any annual plan on RP website.

edit: I went ahead and took a chance. One shipping charge for 2 sim renewals + $12.70 in tax, $258.37 for 2

Beware, it was a pain to port out of red pocket from my experience, even tho the info was posted on my account, the info didn't work and I spent 2 hours for them to figure out and found a way to fix it. Never again

Could you please let us know what you did to solve the port out issue, I tried to port out but failed, they claim they released the number but it's not.

I been using RP for 7 years and moving away as well, one out of four lines is already on US Mobile. For $120 annually... might consider another year for some. But now they add shipping too..

Had port out issue myself. Took three times to contact support via chat. Last time was after US Mobile email that port in is stuck. They had request pending but had to do something at which point I received email on successful port in..

Trying to get a very basic plan to keep in touch with my middle schooler. Will be using an old iPhone that is laying around. Is this a good plan? Also is red pocket good or are there better options out there in terms of carriers/plans? Don't have much knowledge in this area. Thanks!!

Should I select renewal or gsma in the drop down

I have an existing 1gb plan, can I get this to renew that old plan.
Choose the Renewal option, they will email you the code.

I currently has the GSMA 5 GB plan with RP that does not expire until 5/30/25. Can I buy this deal using the renewal option and stack that on my current plan so that it will not expire until 5/30/26?
Not recommended, stacking rarely works. You have 90 days to activate though.

There's an additional step where you have to call RP to release the number I believe.

If you travel to Mexico or Canada, look at the 10gb plan, which gives 1gb of roaming data monthly for those countries and 100 talk/text. Plans below that only get 100mb. I paid $195 for the 360/day 10gb plan, since I go on cruises in Mexico and Canada. It's also the cheapest option for me to use the ATT network, the strongest in my area.
