Sounds like I picked the right time to stop daily driving a ChromeOS device with 4GB of RAM. To be clear, I also struggled with Linux on that device (but I hadn't made much of an effort to optimize my Linux sandbox, and using Linux within the ChromeOS sandbox on a machine with 4GB of RAM was already a formula for failure.
