Presume can install HRB now and wait to install and activate the other software later?

Also, has anybody had any issues to carry forward prior year TT .tax file?
Several years ago it dropped some carryover credits for me when transferring from TT to HRB. In fact, it really only imported a handful of basic things (name, address, . Definitely not as seamless as going year to year with TT. Going back the other way wasn't as bad, but still not as complete as sticking with the same software year to year.

I have used both TT and HRB for years. It really depends on the complexity and style you prefer. TT is more complete in terms of the forms and complexity of return. HRB has been catching up, though and is almost as complete as TT. For me, HRB still doesnt have the forms I need as of 2 years ago. The caveat is that for people who reach that level of complexity, you may want to have your taxes professionally done. In terms of style, TT acts as a black box. You put in numbers per the questions/guide and TT spits out the filled out forms without any explanation. HRB shows you how the forms are filled out per your answers to questiosn. I prefer HRB's style. Finally, TT is arrogant in terms of how they treat customers. They know they are more complete than HRB, so they treat customers poorly. They promise forms that will be ready by certain dates and then dont meet their deadlines. 2 years ago, there was a required form to file and they did not have it available until 2 days before the filing deadline, despite their promises it would be available much earlier and blamed it on the IRS. HRB provided the same forms much earlier, so it was not an IRS issue. There are weekly/monthly updates to TT and they do not specify what fixes were made, so you are unable to determine if the fix impacted you. Bottom line - if you dont absolutely require TT, go with HRB.

Some people will say go with the free filing provided by IRS and states. The problem is that most do not allow HSA or retirement contributions, so that eliminates a lot of people.
FWIW TurboTax download has a forms view too. You can switch any time at the click of a button. You can also enter data directly into the forms if you like. Online software that expects you to pay at the end often hides the forms to force you to pay (I think both TT online and HRB online do this).

Also, last year, HRB had a major snafu with the forms for electric vehicle credits which were extremely delayed.

I use Block year to year but some years I have just started fresh and it only takes minutes to fill in the basics. There is nothing else to import or bring in to make it complete as the current years stuff is what completes the return and maybe a few numbers off the previous years. I do get the carryover credit thing but that is something you can enter as well. Maybe I am missing something but I don't see need to stick with a particular one be it Block or TT. I can do a year on paper or free file site and jump back if need be and it makes no major complications with information entry as little is needed to start a new year.

Yes, aware that it has a forms view, but TT does not show you how the answers to questions populate the forms. The major issue with entering data directly into the forms is that if you override their questionaire with manual entries, you no longer can efile and you then must print the forms and mail. Much of my time is spent figuring out how to fix errors in TT without overriding the incorrect numbers yet allowing me to efile. And these errors persist for years.

HRB did not have a major snafu, The snafu was totally Fed and IRS created and caused all tax prep services across the board and all taxpayers great worry, trouble and wasted time and money. Even paper filers had to wait. In other words government par for the course, they handle tax forms as well as they do hurricanes, borders and crime.

All tax prep services, all tax software and even accountants struggled with that and all blame goes rightly to an incompetent bureaucratic system. The Feds directly and assuredly caused the delay by not releasing the form until Feb. It was discussed in every forum of every tax prep company or service. After that it takes some time to code it into the software and I have no idea as to where you got your information that it was something only Black struggled with. It was complete Fed created mess and gets even uglier as you get down in the details.

Here was the response from my accountant...fyi.
The IRS is working on the Form 8936 at the moment, and we are hearing it will be out of development sometime in February
The last release date for these instructions for this Form 8936 directly form the IRS was dated Jan 2022 – one year ago
The new instructions will most likely have a Feb 2023 release date.
So, we cannot rely on any of the existing instructions as they are in meetings to let us now the final instructions.
On top of that they will change the 2022 Form name from Qualified Plug-In Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit to Clean Vehicle Credit
What disturbs me is that with that known and easily researched truth we still have people spreading misinformation and some are so crazy they use the myth you spread here as evidence that the IRS should take over and control the tax prep industry and even fill in our forms for us with numbers of their choosing.

Good news is that there may be a new game in town and the days of IRS corruption and incompetence may be coming to an end.

If you want to talk about SNAFUs does anyone remember that time when the IRS sent about 160 million in child tax credits to two residential addresses in Atlanta. I saw the congressional hearing and I'll be damned if the commissioner said that that there was nothing in that situation that sent up any flags in their system or caused anybody to check on anything, it was just business as usual.

I don't think I've ever seen this deal paired with Nord VPN. Only garbage virus protection.

Not a fan of the HR interface. But at $22 compared to TT delux + state at $56 now on Amazon, I'm again tempted. TT saves me time.
Really? I think HR block is very easy to use.

Any of these vpn softwares be installed on Debian OS (Linux)? So that i can route all my Internet traffic thru my dns server running on Debian OS.
Or just get a better router. Asus routers have a VPN mesh, enabling you to easily do whole network VPN. I even have 2 different vpn nodes set up for different devices leveraging nord, as I use a certain one closer to work location for my work stuff and one close to home location to keep latency down for everything else.

Sorry I should been more explicit. The issue with that credit and HRB is that it broke e-filing way after the release of the form from the IRS. I think there was maybe one other form that broke efile.

With regard to the carryover year to year - I think it depends on your level of tax knowledge. If you don't have much, it's very easy to miss something, especially if you just import and then follow the guided interview. As an example, TT correctly filled out and carried over information on form 8606 for me for about 10 years before I even knew what that form was for.

I prefer to look at forms for just that reason or at minimum have some idea how it all came together.. Ideally using the tax software should give us some idea of how the taxes work and at this point I trust myself more to find tax breaks, incentives or deductions. I usually do go back and take a look at the previous year or years for that reason.

Really think none should just be plugging in numbers without knowing what the overall tax situation is. Can get away with that if you are just getting a W2 but we may be doing ourselves a disservice. The hard work of taxes is not filing but is keeping records and knowing of and researching for strategies to save on taxes. Tax filing software is one of the easier and quicker parts of the process. I paid a tax guy at one time but after stating to do my own taxes I realized that he did not advise me of many things that could have saved me money.
