Hmm…we've gotten a new member deal every year for probably the last 10ish years. Alternating between my wife I and haven't had any issues at all.
I just use the +gmail trick and use the same email address every year.

I finally got it to work for me. I had to:
-Use a new email address
-Use a new phone number
- and use a new credit/debit card

and then it said "You look familiar, JOIN or RENEW" and I clicked JOIN and their system said meh…ok you are a member now
we tried that. Still didn't work. OTOH, we've been happy with Costco and don't miss Sam's that much. A few items that Costco doesn't carry, sure, but those are definitely not worth Sam's regular membership fee. Plus, we can always ask friends to get a particular item on their weekly Sam's trip and pay them back.
Sure, for $20 it would have been worth it, but our arrangement (which we reciprocate with Costco) works for all of us.

How often are these deals available this time of the year? I got it around this time last year and I just checked old posts on Slickdeals and it looks like it was available in one form or another in Feb-April. Think I'll stock up and let it lapse for a few weeks before looking again. I don't want to overlap memberships.

It worked for me for about 5 years. But I've been trying all kinds of scenarios (moved the dot in gmail, different emails, initial of first name only, different cc, even random address, etc.) to sign up a new membership and nothing worked. I'm pretty sure it's my phone number that prevents me from creating a new acct. I give up.

I see them pop up fairly regularly. I bought a subscription around March/April for $14, and I've seen other deals pop up a few times since then (usually $20/year)

Sams lines are the worst of any retailer I've ever visited. (one disinterested lackadaisical slow-motion worker per line) Lots and lots of total line stoppages, pushing membership upgrades during checkout, frequent slow-motion trips by the cashier to the office for help/advice, while the huge line waits like zombies. ...Whereas Costco has probably the fastest (per item) register of any store I've ever visited. (always at least 2, often 3, and sometimes 4 workers processing just one line)
Jesus man. Learn what Scan and Go is already. Lines are for suckers.

Edited out your boorish rant.

This entire "for new members only" thing is total BS. Sam's is in effect penalizing you for being a loyal, returning customer. I tried using several different (never used before) email addresses, physical addresses, wife's name/my name, etc. and could not get the discounted price.

What Sam's should do is implement a sliding scale renewal rate for existing members. If you've been a member for 1 year, then $10 off, 2 years $20, etc etc. This would ultimately encourage loyal customers to remain and not have to try to "outwit" the Sam's renewal website.

Not sure I'm going to re-up with Sam's when it comes around.

yeah, there's a site giving 50% back and links to a deal at the $20/$60 membership price
How do I connect the cashback site and the deal link? When I click from the cashback site, it redirects to Sam's with the full price.

Once I submitted all my info, I was presented with the option to either renew or sign up as new customer. I chose new customer. Then the next screen said I could not sign up as a new customer. There was an option to proceed without getting any coupon deal. To me, this unique clumsiness and inefficiency (in all areas), is what defines the Sams club experience. I turned back. Everything about shopping there sucks, except the prices. And the administrative stuff is always a nightmare. I think they did me a favor by not letting me make payment. I'll just stick with Coscto only again this year. (and willingly pay 3 times the $20 Sams fee) Costco costs a couple bucks more on every single item, but the service and administrative experience is exponentially better than Sams. Whole different world. I decided to try Sam's again about a year ago after dropping my Sam's membership many years ago for those reasons and others.
I found the stores to be even more crowded than I remembered. The receipt check lines at the door were also much longer, and the employees checking receipts seem much pushier about it (I used to bypass the line without them saying anything).

However, the Sam's I shop at installed machine vision exit arches during the past year that have dramatically shorted lines to exit the store. The exit arches and Scan & Go have made shopping at Sam's tolerable for me. If not for those two innovations, I wouldn't stay a member.

So, Sam's has earned kudos from me for at least partially solving two of the biggest problems with their stores. The corporate drones at Walmart who aspired to dream up and implement these innovations deserve a pat on the back and a raise. It's a shame the same can't be said about their Costco counterparts.

I've been using these deals with a plus email address like "[email protected]" because email systems ignore anything after the plus symbol to end up in your inbox. It's also useful to see who's selling your email.
