A few reviews stating junk after about a year. And another "...described as a GARAGE READY refrigerator/freezer.; BUT what it fails to disclose is that the AMBIENT TEMPERATURE must be 38 degree's or above for it to function as a freezer..."

I've had this for about a year now. I got it when I bought a 1/2 cow. It's been great. No complaints so far. When we lost power during Helene everything stayed frozen for over 36hrs until I got a generator situated.

Do you need an extended warranty? Half of reviews I saw had instances of failure.

Can the frost-free be disabled?
You wouldn't want to. It's frost free because it's built like a regular fridge - with a fan blowing across an evaporator. Every so many hours it goes through a defrost cycle to melt the ice building up on the evaporator. If you disable the defrost, the evap will become a solid block of ice, no cold air will flow through it, and your food will get warm.

I picked up a Hamilton Beach 11cubic foot upright last year for 299. Works great keep it in the garage no problems. It's still available at Costco for 399 delivered and installed right now for anyone that missed this deal.

Could you explain why this would not apply to a chest-freezer format unit?

Yes. Fridge and freezers that are larger than a mini fridge require a dedicated outlet or you risk them tripping or the compressor going out.

Frost-free heats the inside of the unit, where the food is - no?

All freezers and/or refrigerators should have a dedicated outlet. A breaker could get tripped (from something other than the freezer) and you might not catch it unti it's too late.
