while I have done my fair share of research in the last couple of years, I still haven't decided if it's wise to use one of these giant hard drives as a backup for my secondary backups of my old family photos, videos and other junk. (currently around 15TB of stuff... they are currently on the original media, two 10TB hard drives, on the cloud(both Google Drive and iCloud), as well as data Blu-ray discs.

My thinking is that I can NEVER have enough back-ups.(of back-ups of back-ups) because any one of them can and probably will fail several years down the road? Smilie

When big SSDs4TB or 8GB+ are cheap enough, I may also look into getting some of those as another form of back up?

Sound paranoid... well... yes... becuase while I was backing up stuff, two of my back-up drives died within a day of each other, (one WD and one Seagate) and I lost all of my converted film and photos between 1980 and 1985. Frown That's why everythying that I have currently has at least 3 different forms of back-ups on different medias or the cloud, at a minimum, and stored at different locations(my house or with my other family members)

By way of comparison of recent sales on external 20 TB drives, the WD Easystore was $250 on Black Friday and the WD Elements was $266 on Prime Day in the Fall.

I just bought four of these today and so far I've shucked one. It's branded as a Baracuda and uses HAMR.

Update: All four drives are the same.

How does this compare to the WD easystore that they have in terms of performance and failure rate? I had a Seagate from about 10-15 years ago that just stopped working a few years back. Ever since I've been getting WD's including a 20TB easystore. Debating on getting one because I missed out on the 20TB WD.
I use these to store FCP video projects/backups.

Your comments do not align with my real-world experience in enterprise IT. In our datacenter we have hundreds of TB of data on Seagate EXOS SAS 7.2k drives and have not had a single failure in 5 years, with writes of many TB per day to the arrays.

For inquiring minds, these arrays handle backups for Veeam and Acronis Cyber Infrastructure for hundreds of VMs.

oh pardon me for not knowing about a specific hard drive that seemingly is not listed anywhere else on the internet except in one reddit post

like the commenter said, they are probably just binned down drives and not terrible by any means. Someone will buy and report back to us all.

Drives typically last more than 5 years and at least every 5 years hdd size doubles and 1/2's in price so Just backup the smaller drives to a larger drive every 5 years and park the smaller backups somewhere safe as a tertiary backup. I am surprised your drives are failing this much how often are you rewatching home videos from 1985 that your wearing out hard drives? You would have to be seriously living in the past to watch them that much!

I also use Backblaze as a backup to my backup. However, I shudder to think if I ever had to do a full restore from the cloud. Also confusing why they are sticking with the 8TB size mail option.

Not to mention if you pay month to month the price has almost doubled.

Companies like Backblaze & many others use majority Seagate drives for storage. I have external Seagate & WD drives from 2008 that both still work. Seagate is not a bad word.
