while I have done my fair share of research in the last couple of years, I still haven't decided if it's wise to use one of these giant hard drives as a backup for my secondary backups of my old family photos, videos and other junk. (currently around 15TB of stuff... they are currently on the original media, two 10TB hard drives, on the cloud(both Google Drive and iCloud), as well as data Blu-ray discs.

My thinking is that I can NEVER have enough back-ups.(of back-ups of back-ups) because any one of them can and probably will fail several years down the road? Smilie

When big SSDs4TB or 8GB+ are cheap enough, I may also look into getting some of those as another form of back up?

Sound paranoid... well... yes... becuase while I was backing up stuff, two of my back-up drives died within a day of each other, (one WD and one Seagate) and I lost all of my converted film and photos between 1980 and 1985. Frown That's why everythying that I have currently has at least 3 different forms of back-ups on different medias or the cloud, at a minimum, and stored at different locations(my house or with my other family members)

By way of comparison of recent sales on external 20 TB drives, the WD Easystore was $250 on Black Friday and the WD Elements was $266 on Prime Day in the Fall.

I just bought four of these today and so far I've shucked one. It's branded as a Baracuda and uses HAMR.

Update: All four drives are the same.

I used to have a NAS with the 321 backup rule deployed, but as my storage needs grew, it got to be too expensive so I transitioned to DAS. The choice really comes down to how valuable your data is and what you can afford—both in terms of operational cost and potential data loss. IMHO, for most people, DAS offers a more affordable and simple use. Whichever option you choose, I'd recommend implementing 321 for your most precious data (in my case family photos and important documents).

The price is too good for me to resist despite my reservations about Seagate so I'm in at $237.36 shipped; thanks OP.

My personal experience with Seagate has been terrible over the past 7 years; I've had 5 drives fail on me during that time and all of them have been Seagate externals. (50% failure rate)

I think a relevant incriminating fact regarding the quality of these drives is the measly 1-year warranty. Notice how in the descriptions for these drives there's no mention of it? You have to go out of your way to find info about the policy which is 1 year [seagate.com].

However, I just perhaps plan to use the drive for relatively useless ubiquitous easily replaceable data; you know things like Lancelot Secret Chimp and My Mother The Car. If the drive fails and thus losing all that junk then no big deal.

My truly rare valuable personal data I backup of course (Around 4TB) but backing up video entertainement media is a waste of time, money and resources IMO. Just download/acquire all the tripe again when hard drive failure eventually happens, usually at better quality and compression rates. Now if you excuse me, I need to possibly prepare my storage rack for the upcoming $250 drive I just purchased in participation of maybe hoarding the 50 Worst TV Shows of All Time [imdb.com]. I'm joking of course... [tenor.com]

Yeah, I was going to say this. It was IBM, and then later HGST. That said, the Deskstar was still among the best drives at the time. It was just unfortunate one particular model damage the brand forever.

fwiw I had every Seagate ~1tb drive fail. That is not deskstar boomer days. In the boomer days, Western Digital was garbage (caviar drives IIRC).
Briefly looking your source and based on AFR, it looks like both Toshiba and WD has much earlier failure rates. There's a spike on the Seagate drive, but overall they seem to be in-line.

What am I missing?

That's still pricey (for me). Say to backup this 20TB drive, it would cost roughly $80/month. Glacier S3 from memory also takes time to get access. However, it's likely among the cheapest options out there.

As I haven't had a Seagate External HDD for years, I can't speak to what they have inside, but if they're similar to the WD's, they are fine. That said, I have a bunch of Seagate X16 and x 18, and maybe X20 drives, from 14-18 tb and they are very comparable to my 14 and 16 tb WD's... typically 255-280 mbps. I have had zero failures. Some are refurb's bought from serverpartdeals.com, which has excellent prices on refurb's.

I'm also not sure if its simple to shuck the drives, as it was for the WD's that I've shucked... none for a few years.

Definitely bad warranty, but from what I gather these contains EXOS and IronWolf's drive (except for the recent Barracuda drive that may be HAMR drive to boot). Supposedly the inner drives are registered with a different warranty period, but I have not heard anyone claim on those to see if Seagate honors that.

If it's an EXO or Ironwolf, they're good enterprise drives.
