I also went down the deep rabbit hole of trying to find a nice EDC pen for engineering/office work. I told myself I wouldn't spend more than $20 for a click style pen. I got this pen ($17), the Parker Jotter (plastic body), and the Zebra F-701.

The Parker Jotter was too slippery for long term usage, but loved the options for G2 style refills. And the click is very satisfying.

The Zebra F-701 had a great construction, okay click, but terrible refills. There are ways to mod the pen to accept Fisher space pen refills or the Ohto flash dry, but it never felt right. And the Fisher Space pen refill is not smooth for everyday use, unless you expect to launched into space anytime soon.

To me this Rotring 600 was the balance between the Jotter and the F-701. All metal construction and knurled grip to prevent the pen from slipping. Also takes any G2 style refill. The black colorway is also very nice. Not sure about the durability, but it has held up after a few drops on concrete.

The absolute best refill for this pen would be the G2 Style Uniball Jetstream SXR-600-07 which uses their proprietary hybrid ink that is smooth like gel, but writes like a typical ballpoint. But I much prefer the Ohto Flash Dry in 0.5mm because of the thinner point and overall gel smoothness. Also I'm not going to drop ~$4 on a refill. Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 is great too, but I've had too much skipping issues and their .7mm is too thick for my liking.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk

This matches the price it was going for on Black Friday.

For the person asking about replacement refills, in the last thread someone recommended the "Schmidt easyFLOW 9000". I tried it out and love it!

The mechanical pencil (0.5mm model 600 in black) is also on sale for $17.62:

Thanks, looks like it matches lowest price from about 3 years ago per C3 with max S&S though I see an old SD post for less.

I have a couple of these and they are my favorite retractable pens to use. The build quality is so solid without being too heavy, and the retraction action is soooo satisfying.

rOtring is one of the best values in an EDC pen. I personally prefer the model 800, which uses a twist mechanism to extend and retract the ballpoint. It costs more, but I'm just not a fan of "clicky" pens.

The rOtring ink cartridge is mediocre. What is the recommended upgrade?

Fisher space pen refill fits just fine, just use the included plastic Parker adapter.

I'm fine with the rOtring cartridge, but I did notice it looks like my Parker T-Ball Jotter refills [amazon.com] and they fit perfectly.

Yes, and life is just life until it isn't.

Until someone requires an emergency tracheotomy, or you need rescuing and have the bottle and paper, or have the opportunity to spitball shoot. A uniquely important piece of kit, sadly, like slide rulers, lost on the young.

I received it as a present and while it feels nice in hand because its metal, writing experience is like any other pen and absolutely nothing special. I ended up using a different plastic pen for this purpose. Would I pay $18 for it? No way.

Couldn't you just use a different point refill?
