This literally is new..... Came out like 2 months ago.
Stop supporting them. Get a 9070 or rx7900. No difference on gaming
This thing is a beast. Worth buying for anyone doing a new AM5 build.

As someone who tried to get this Amazon earlier, they lost my shipment in late December for an order placed in mid November. You might have better luck with quicker deliver from Bestbuy as I was able to snag one and get it shipped in 2 days versus having to wait several months from Amazon. If you're not in a rush, then by all means it doesn't hurt to queue to get one, but I'm a bit salty after Amazon never delivered the item to the shipper. It was "lost" in the warehouse.

Any thoughts on a good motherboard for this thing? Motherboards are such a quagmire…
Look up Hardware Unboxed on YouTube. They have a few videos comparing AM5 motherboards.

any recommend motherboard?
Hardware Unboxed on YouTube has head-to-head comparisons of AM5 motherboards.

Be careful because AMD has introduced intentionally confusing chipset names with the 800 series, which is just unintuitively rebranded 600 chipsets: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=H0axuzyN_1s

Just wait..New processors coming soon.
10th gen will match nicely with DDR6! That over 6yo computers will be a REAL BUMP of performance vs the chump change marketing

Microcenter bundled this with Asus TUF B650-E. You need to plug all power cables, including the optional 4 pin as the 9800x3d is power hungry.
Actually, the 9800X3D's power consumption is average for an AMD CPU and definitely much lower than Intel CPUs':

Running 7950x3d, I can't see myself upgrading any time soon unless they have some crazy gains with new cpus
Same, next upgrade for a cpu will be the last one they off for the mobo lol. First time building with AMD so I'm guess we have like 2 more generations before they go to a new mobo or something..

I was watching a video comparing gaming performance between a 7800X3D and a 9800X3D, both paired with an RTX 4090, and the difference in FPS in games was very small if any. Wondering if this is even worth the price. Coming from a i5 13600k.
If you game at 4k with high graphics settings, no real difference because you'll be GPU bottlenecked. Unless you use upscaling (DLSS, XeSS, FSR), which at 4k is quite good, and in which case the X3D CPUs can make a noticeable difference.

You will surely see a big difference at 1080p or 1440p, provided your GPU can make use of these CPUs.

Whether it's worth the price is up to you. The 7800X3D is $360 at Amazon, which is much more palatable than the $480 9800X3D.

Definitely not worth the upgrade. To fully take advantage of the 9800x3d you need to play at a low resolution, 1080p or below while also having a beefy GPU like a 4080 or better, which doesnt make much sense. The 9800x3d trades blows with a 13600k in multi-thread and productivity, so its not even a straight upgrade. And you'd have to buy a new AM5 motherboard too.

Honestly at $480 (normal price these days) the 9800x3d is not a deal, there are vastly better options in terms of price to performance, and overall performance. Yes it's technically the best gaming CPU, but for most people they'd be better off buying another CPU and spending that extra money on a better GPU.

If you can find it at a similar price point or even slightly higher, I'd take the 7950X3D over this for more than just gaming. If only gaming, this is the best. However ...

I recently got the 7950x3D at microcenter bundled with MSI Mag tomahawk x670e motherboard and 32gb ddr5 for a bundle price of around $720, which came out to $453 for the 7950x3d, and it's an absolute flagship beast of a 16 core/ 32 thread CPU to match my 4090. Beyond future proof.

I'm not sure $480 is that great of a price for the 9800X3D in comparison. Will eventually come down to below $400 in the coming months after the hype dies down. if you can wait, wait.

Get a x670/670e with pcie 5. No need to get a x870 at this point. I'm using a asrock x670e with my 9800x3d with no issue

Depends on your use case. Racing and flight sims are generally CPU intensive and if you throw in VR into the mix then you are going to want a high vram card(12GB is the minimum for VR in multiplayer for DCS World) on top of the higher performance CPU

Watch out for scam listings. There is a legit Amazon listing for $15 cheaper.

Just get a asrock a620m for $69. You won't do oc on x3d, and mb has literally no effect on default. During my 20s years career building pc, I only opt for non-basic mb for specific reasons such as I need more pcie or I oc.
Which mobo are you talking about? The 9800X3D needs has a 120W TDP, and A620 mobos are limited to 65W. It will work, but it will throttle your CPU big time.

No one can convince me 480.00 is a good price JUST for this CPU . I stopped gaming a couple years ago and do mostly productivity work now. Picked up a 13700kf for 180.00 used but came looking new and it's a beast, running some now cheap manually oced b die DDR4 in gear 1 and everything is near instant....
With the 300.00 difference that can pay for a lot more GPU for most gamers.
This is not a slickdeal, this is a shill deal.

The difference in gaming is about 8% at 1080p. At 4k, you won't see any difference because you'll be GPU bottlenecked. Either way, having the best or the second-best gaming CPU on the market won't make a difference to any gamer. They are both awesome!

Where the 9800X3D shines compared to the 7800X3D are the productivity loads, where it does very, very well. AMD repositioned the 3D cache to a cooler location to allow higher sustained frequencies. So, for those who want productivity and gaming, the 9800X3D is really good.

The issue with the 7800X3D was that it had been retailing around $400–450, while the 9800X3D was $480. So the choice was obvious then. But the 7800X3D is $360 on Amazon right now, which changes things for many pockets.
