I just purchased the Tactix 7 from the deal last month and I want to make one comment on these solar Garmins. This is my first Garmin watch and apparently the solar versions have what I consider to be a subpar screen resolution compared to the non solar counterparts and other brands I've had. In addition, they dont get very bright. The pictures in the listings are very misleading with bright and crisp screens. I would read reviews and look online to comparisions between solar and non solar. Now, the watch itself is incredible as far as the features crammed into it and having what it claims is a 21d charge is perfect for me as I never want to plug in a watch and hence why I have moved on from Apple.

I recently upgraded from an older MIPS fenix (solar screen) to an epix (AMOLED screen). The functional improvement is fantastic indoors and nonexistent outdoors. If you're primary use for this is outdoors, you'll be fine with the solar screen, just make sure you get the settings right. It's plenty bright in sunlight and in clouds to see clearly. In direct sun, it's easier to read than the AMOLED. The AMOLED is much better indoors. Alot of my training is indoors and I don't do many activities that last for more than 5 or 6 hours, so it works well for me. The solar is far superior if you plan to use it for serious hiking or camping because the battery life is that much better and the ability to read it during daylight without powering the screen really helps preserve battery life.
One thing I didn't expect to love as much as I do is the built in flashlight. I literally use it multiple times a day (especially since it's winter and dark all the time).

My single biggest gripe about the fenix and similar Garmin watches is the proprietary charging cable/connection point which loosens over time. I've tried aftermarket chargers, cleaning the contacts, and new Garmin OEM cables, but fails to charge on numerous occasions.

I have a 5x and have dealt with this issue many times, in fact it's so bad a couple times I almost gave up on the watch.

Same experience. I have a 5 year old Fenix 6X I found I have to replace the charge cable every 18 mos or so...and only the Garmin ones work--rip off at $25.
