I bought 3 for my family and myself in the past. Great backpack for travel, fits a carryons worth in a personal item.
Only negative I found, no waterbottle holder or dedicated laptop pocket

Check your "favorite" cheap airline. The one we just flew and hated has personal item dimensions of 17 x 13 x 6

They have similar (updated?) models with both the laptop pocket and a water bottle holder now. For example, here's one of about the same dimensions that comes with three packing cubes for about $27.30 (after 30% off coupon):

I fly American often. IMO they don't give people a hard time often. For 2 inches I think you'll be fine as long as the thing isn't loaded and you can shove it under seat.

I've purchased and returned this deal in the past. The quality is very flimsy and cheaply made in comparison to Amazon's brand 40L carryon bag that has a much more solid, sturdy feel to it. If you don't care, buy the cheaper option. In the end, it turned out, I did care about the quality and didn't want to be an extreme cheapskate my whole life.

40L is too large if you pack it full. This thing easily exceeds 30 lbs when fully packed.

I just noticed that as well when checking out the deal. For a couple dollars more you seem to get packing cubes, the laptop and water bottle holder, even seems to have a USB passthru which could be useful.

I usually carry extra clothes in my personal item backpack in case I need to remove some to "wear" and squish my personal item back to regulation.

It's only a personal item if the airline doesn't check the measurements. It's 2" taller than it should be (20" vs 18") despite all other measurements fitting (13" meets the 14" width max, 7" high equals the 8" max high). Annoying these companies don't bother to check these details.

This is apparently the XL version. The large version is $29 on the page and has better measurements. 18x12x7. With expansion it's 32-35L and a more realistic and consistent personal item size. It's what people should be buying if they want this particular backpack and don't want to bring a carry on.

No joke I've been using this backpack for over two years traveling everywhere in the us and it hasn't broken as of yet. I carry heavy items too. It is uncomfortable for longs period of time tho.
